Folksy Book Club

Just popped on to say I just bought ‘The last thing to burn’ yesterday, I’m already 100 pages in and can absolutely confirm it’s a real page turner, grim yes but a great read so far.

Enjoy! (If that’s the right word..!) I found I couldn’t put it down - it was a ‘just one more chapter’ kind of book for me… :face_with_bags_under_eyes:

Just reporting back to say I’m 3 books in to the DS Smith series recommended by @OasiscraftUK and loving them - thanks so much for telling me about them.

I loved Tom Jones, read it last year and it really made me smile right from the preface. I then went on to read Smollett’s ‘The Expedition of Humphry Clinker’ (I think I must have been trawling through some list of the greatest classic comic novels or something) and that made me laugh so hard as well as giving a fascinating insight into the society of the time

Woohoo, so glad you’re enjoying them. Recommend the Kings Lake series too which are a follow on  Happy reading!

Definitely adding that one to my reading list, thank you!

Does anyone else keep Pinterest boards of ‘books to read’? It came to me in a moment of genius about 2 years ago, after years of writing them on bits of paper and losing them

Forever Amber by Kathleen Winsor. A belting read set in the times of Charles II. It inspired my own writing and is beautifully written.

Hi I’ve finally started on the Joy Ellis books. Am currently listening to the first one in the Matt Ballard series (Beware the Past). Loving it so far, but it took me a while to get used to the narrator

I often find that with the narrators too @OasiscraftUK - love that series, must check if any have been added that I haven’t ready yet.

I’m reading The French Revolution by Christopher Hibbert. Reading A Tale of Two Cities showed me how little I actually knew about it, so I thought I’d brush up on a bit of history. Ever so slightly disturbing, to put it mildly :downcast_face_with_sweat:

Ooh added that one to my reading list - looks really interesting!

It is, and it’s actually very readable! I was worried I’d get lost in all the names and dates and French terms etc, but I’m managing to take it all in pretty well. I decided a while back I need to brush up on my history, but looking at all the books available, and all the time periods to choose from, I had no idea where to start. I found this secondhand one on a good deal from Abebooks and thought I’d just jump in!

Some of the best books I have read are by Anne Tyler, my favoutie was Redhead By the Side of The Road, she writes brilliantly about ordinary people. I also love David Nicholls, One Day, You Are Here and Us are very good. A surprisingly good read is Glorious Exploits by Ferddia Lennon, excellent, one I would never have chosen but recommended and so well written
