Getting Folksy known as a craft store

Anyone remember when HOCHANDA changed to THE CRAFT STORE? The reason was that if anyone asked what was HOCHANDA? it had to be explained to them. The Craft Store didn’t.

On YT Cactus Lady Creations 5 Crafts That Sell. at 2.49 time talks of - a domain name dot store. This signals to customers and Google that it is an online store. ie. No confusion..

Would having something after Folksy ( suggestions please ) such as Folksy Craft Store - Folksy Crafts Online help with letting people know what Folksy is, after the initial “ I’ve never heard of that before” Any thoughts? Jan

Sounds a good idea. Also it means Folksy as a site might get picked up more on searches.

How about ‘Folksy Handmade Crafts’

I am sure people familiar with it would still always just use the shortened version, Folksy, but for those that weren’t it would certainly sum it up at a glance.

That’s what I thought too, Liz. We are the home of British Craft which is on the Find me on Folksy advert I send out with my orders with Allsortsofstitches added but if I gave them out I would have to explain, I think, so I might try to design a second card with just

                             Folksy.com British Crafts Online

to leave on tables and notice-boards etc. ( incognito so to speak ) ! Jan

Sorry, but I have to admit that I’m not sure ‘craft store’ would work. I would assume that it was just somewhere to buy craft materials, like Hobbycraft. If I was looking for a new bag, piece of jewellery etc. I would not look in a craft store…

That is a good point, Kim.

Somehow it needs to convey that Folksy itself is not a “craft shop”, but that is the umbrella site for a huge variety of shops selling all different things. A bit like a Department store. I can’t think of a short pithy phrase to sum it up. Something like :-

‘Every handmade item imaginable, all under one “virtual” roof’

Folksy is really not very much younger (3 years max) than that other very well known E* craft site who it seems has no need at all to add the words craft shop as a prefix.
So not sure why it would have any effect for Folksy to add it now after almost 18 years of trading ?

John Lewis do not have a tag line after the name, neither does M & S. Never seen a shop advertise what they do in a company name.

Once a name is well known, then it doesnt need it. But there are so many times when I see just a name of a company I have never heard of, maybe sponsoring an event, on a football shirt, or just in an advert, and I havent a clue what they do or sell, so would never go to them as a result of just seeing their name. If it said “Bloggs Insurance”, or “Bloggs dog food”, then it would be more helpful than just the name “Bloggs” on banners around the tennis stadium or whatever the event is.

Perhaps I could remind you that Folksy has had 18 years to get well known and has failed to achieve that status. It is, I believe smaller than it was a few years ago probably with half the number of sellers and certainly, according to my own sales, over the years half the sales too.
( I am not including the COVID factor in that).

Isn’t that exactly what prompted this thread?

Err sorry.. isn’t what ?
I will remind you that the E,* platform is just named E* and is known world wide and started only in 2005 with no need for any explanatory suffix.

The fact that Folksy isnt as well known as one would like, and that when people hear the name they dont immediately know what it is.

What reaction do you get if you say Folksy. ?

What about my suggestion of Folksy.com British Crafts Online ?
Does this say Where, What, How. ?

This is just putting the information with the name rather than separate from it, so I’m going to make up some cards to give out as I said and hope it works. Jan

Ah but that’s because there is no advertising, Getting a company name known is exactly why the advertising industry exists

I am just awaiting for the big bang regarding Folksy’s future! Times are even tougher worldwide than they were a year ago and it’s going to get worse if no resolution is found quickly regarding the Iran war. Sink or swim comes to mind. I’m trying to keep going doing my own thing, I don’t need another heart attack!

I’m not sure it will make a difference, if people havn’t heard of Folksy after all these years I doubt they will hear of Folksy crafts either, if the name isn’t sticking then I don’t see how it would make a difference. My biggest customer on Folksy buys bears regularly from me, she didn’t know me before I started selling on Folksy yet when she messages she says ‘I have just been to your E..y shop and she’s not the only one I have local customers who mention my E shop (I havn’t had an E shop since I started on here) I call my vacuum cleaner a hoover when in fact it’s a Dyson but I never say we need to Dyson, I rarely even say we need to vacuum I tend to say we need to hoover! … perhaps in a similar way the E name sticks partly because it was the first and biggest online platform for handcrafted items, it grew quickly and became a name people would remember and of course it has used TV advertising, without advertising Folksy won’t become a household name.

Personally if I was going to try and get the name out there by adding anything I would use it as it is officially known, Folksy, The home of British Craft. I wouldn’t change it to crafts online or .Com crafts as we already have The home of British craft which explains it, I also think it might be an idea to check with Folksy admin before doing so.

At the last couple of markets I’ve sold at, more than one punter has asked if I sell on E***. One went as far as to say she would be more likely to buy from me online from an E*** store. No matter what we may think of E as sellers, buyers have a lot of faith in it. That’s very hard to compete with. Especially without advertising.

What about the cost to sellers, stationery already printed, social media links. To change the name or add to after all these years is too late. In my advertising such as labels I now use The Home of British Craft. The logistics for Folksy would out weigh the benefit.

And I’ll just hold my hand up for all us painters, illustrators and other artists who might not feel seen under a purely ‘craft’ branding.

Whose talking about Folksy changing anything? Don’t you read the posts properly? I am making cards with Folksy.com British Crafts Online and I’m letting people ( and there are always new people ) know what Folksy is in a more condensed way. Jan
