We haven’t had a product photography thread for a while so I thought we could all share our top tips here.

I’ve recently changed my phone (I take all my photos on my i phone 14) and I am having a few problems with keeping my photos nice and bright. I photo edit using the phone’s buit in software which does give me the ability to increase the brightness quite well. I also used to have a dedicated space to take my photos but had to re-jig the studio and lost that, so now I take most of my photos inside a wooden crate - not ideal but it does seem to create the right kind of lighting environment.

Tell us about your photography equipment, set-up and editing software. What works well, what are your problem areas etc

Interesting subject Sarah @dotterypottery i have trouble with my photos some of the time depends on the weather… I have a little set up at my back door as I have a small window that lets just enough light to take decent photos on a good day, it if it’s dull I have to tweak with iPad photo software and I use a iPhone 15 for taking photos…I always add extra brightness as I notice when uploaded to folksy they darken… don’t know why as I’ve asked support a few times but I think I have it sorted now

My top tip is…be mindful of what colours you wear when photographing anything reflective. Back in the early days, when I was first setting up my shop, I spent a day photographing my silver jewellery whilst wearing a shocking pink top. Of course the pink reflected in the silver on every single photo making it look like copper. Unfortunately I didn’t realise that until I was looking through the photos on my desk top later. So I had to do them all again! I wasted a day but learnt a valuable lesson. Now I always wear pale grey on photography days.

I take all of my photographs in the conservatory, I use a tripod and use plain boards behind usually ivory. My problem is summer photography, on a bright day it changes the colour and texture of my bears so I prefer to do them when we have good light but not too sunny and mohair looks brassy if it’s too bright. I use an Iphone 11 then edit in google photos on the phone and on my android tablet. The main issue is the colour on my phone is different to my tablet so it can take half a day to get right (or what looks right on my screens). I tend to adjust brightness, contrast and white point and on sunny photos also take the saturation or warmth down.

Cat @CatLanternStudio - It’s great when you find the perfect spot for taking photos. Years ago, I had a great spot on the windowsill where the light gently filtered through a cotton blind that I used to have - it diffused the light perfectly. It was good for flat items but not when I needed to take photos with a wider angle. Eventually, I got rid of those blinds and nothing ever worked as well since!

Angela, when I photograph shiny pottery, I have the same problem. I normally do everything I can to stay out of the shot but one day I also noticed a blue dot on lots of my photos and realised that it was something refelecting on the surface! Shiny things are tricky light properly.

Yes, that’s a problem isn’t it? The way that the colours are displayed.
I tend to do everything on my ipad and iphone these days are the colours seem more true.
My laptop has got a slightly yellow tinge to it.

The job I dislike to most, things have been easier now I’ve moved though. I take them in the garden room where there’s a roof light where it’s light most of the time but I do use daylight lamps but a pretty old camera. I’m dreading the day the camera packs up as I find that it’s difficult to take clear pictures of card illustrations on my phone and a new camera would be so expensive.

When taking photos, try putting a piece of white card and a piece of black card within the frames of the photo that you crop out later, you can then adjust the exposure so the white looks white and the black look black. When I was working in a framing shop, we used to print limited edition prints for customers and this is how we adjusted the images

I invested in a small photo booth as it was a bargain… for small objects I think they can work well.. you get various colour backgrounds and a variety of coloured light options, a diffuser too. Options to take overhead pics also. Sadly I found it too small for my hats but when I’ve made something small, yes it’s a great option especially as we’re heading towards winter and dull days. I find that using photo editing apps are a great option especially if you’re after a white background… I have a white sheet with some sticky velcro stuck on and some velcro stuck to the workroom wall, this works as a great fast backdrop 👍

My problem is lack of room and lack of natural light.

I live in a small Georgian farm cottage. All rooms are small. Can’t even fit a 3 seater in the front room. Bedroom has just enough room to walk around the bed. It has small windows and we are situated right at the end of a bridge that goes over the motorway so the footpath in front of the house rises up to the bridge and there’s a high fence along the side of the house separating us from the motorway embankment.

Lighting is everything. Photographers are famous for being control freaks when it comes to lighting - we want to control everything and consistency is the key.

Phone cameras are good, but lack that control so if you have several products in a range, greetings cards for example you will struggle. Not for one moment saying it can’t be done - it is just hard work.

If you are photographing smaller items such as jewellery or cards a cheap light box can be had from on line and will guarantee you consistent backgrounds. Editing wise, again phones are OK, but a cheap / old digital camera and some editing software is a far better bet. Photoshop is king, but expensive, Gimp does everything most people will ever need to do and is free. There are also countless tutorials on line for how to use it.

Ideally you want to be in a room with no ‘spare’ light coming in so daft as it sounds photographing in the evening works well.

For one off larger items, clothing or larger craft items consistency is not so important - no one can compare this one to that one so generally a bright but overcast day gives best light.

I’m happy to offer advice to anyone - I’m not in the market to do product photography and certainly not looking to sell that as a service.

I thought this might be of interest of anyone using iPhone or iPad, despite editing my photos and getting brightness correct once I upload to folksy for listings they go dark so I asked google and I got this answer..I’ve not tried it yet but I’m going to this afternoon..

Modern iPads use incredibly bright screens that display an expanded range of vibrant, high-contrast colours. When you take or look at a photo on your iPad, it displays beautifully. However, the internet runs on a standard colour profile called **sRGB**. When you upload that file directly to a website like Folksy, the site’s system strips out Apple’s hidden display data. Without that data, your iPad has to render the photo raw, causing the image to look significantly darker, flatter, or muddy. Deleting and re-uploading fails because the exact same file metadata is processed the same way every time. [1, 2]

You can completely bypass this issue using the **built-in tools already on your iPad** without needing to install any third-party conversion apps: [3]

## **The Built-In iPad Fix (No Apps Needed)**

You can force your iPad to save a standard, web-safe version of your photo directly through Apple’s built-in **Files app** : [3]

1. Open your iPad **Photos** app and select the product photo you want to upload.
2. Tap the **Share icon** (the square with an arrow pointing up) and select **Save to Files**. Pick any folder (like “Downloads”).
3. Close your photos and open the built-in **Files app** (the blue folder icon).
4. Find your photo, **long-press on it** until a menu pops up, and navigate to **Quick Actions \> Convert Image**.
5. Select **JPEG** as the format and choose **Actual Size / Original**. [3, 4]

This creates a fresh copy of the image that flattens Apple’s high-contrast HDR data down into a universal web format. Upload _this new version_ from the Files app to Folksy, and its brightness will match what you see on your screen. [1, 2]

## **Check Your iPad Display Settings**

If the photo still looks slightly off, your screen might be tricking you into editing your photos too dark while you take them. Check these two quick settings: [5]

-
- **Turn off View Full HDR:** Go to your iPad **Settings \> Photos** and turn off **View Full HDR**. This forces your screen to show you what the photo _actually_ looks like without Apple artificially boosting the bright spots. [2, 6]
- **Turn off True Tone:** Go to **Settings \> Display & Brightness** and turn off **True Tone**. True Tone changes the warmth and contrast of your screen based on the light in your room, which makes it very difficult to judge the true brightness of an item. [5]

Do you ever use Folksys editing tool on listings. I find it helpful for little tweaks when I don’t want to go back and reload another photo.

I find dull days are better for my photography, I take my images in the conservatory with all the blinds closed but if it’s sunny I don’t get realistic results.
I take them with an iphone and use a tripod and shutter so no shaking from my hands but I then edit them in google photos. I find the colours vary from my iphone to tablet and my samsung tablet looks as they should once I have edited. It takes hours for one item, I spend a long time editing the photos but as someone else mentioned once they are uploaded they sometimes look dark in my Folksy shop so I often use the editing in the listing view to tweak the light again just for the Folksy listings.
Once happy with images in google I have to download them so there are 2 copies displaying in my google photo library otherwise I can’t get them to upload to socials.
Sunny days change the colours on my bears and mohair can look brassý, bright but no sun is ideal.
