Upload problems

I have had occasional problems uploading photos to the site. (I’ve also looked at some older threads on similar issues). Is there an optimum pixel-width for photos?

For example, this morning I tried several times to upload a photo that was around 1700 pixels width, was 72ppi resolution (low-res) and below the 5megs file-size limit, but it just wouldn’t go up. I eventually solved it by reducing the width even further to around 1300 pixels and also the jpeg quality from 100% to 98% (hence reducing file-size to below 2 megs).
However, I’ve uploaded other items at various widths and file-sizes above 2 megs with no problem. Hence my query.
(sorry if it’s too technical).

It can be a little tricky to answer because your own internet speed can also affect this.
Our limit is 5MB, but the file also has to upload within a certain time otherwise it times out and the upload fails. That means you could have exactly the same image that successfully uploads for someone with a fast connection, but will fail for someone with a slow connection so they need to try making it smaller.

The size the images display at on the listing page can vary depending on the screen size for the device you’re using, but 1300 pixels wide should be enough to display well on most screens (for example on my desktop the images are showing around 794 pixels wide, on my phone it’s 1080 wide).

I’m always on a desktop PC so it sounds like the 1300 mark would be fine. Broadband speed where I live, unfortunately, is rural…about 2.5 Megabits per second; but it serves well enough for now…ok, I can keep that in mind re the timeout thing, I’m sure it’ll be ok most of the time. With thanks.
