Please help, I am struggling to find a suitable category for my kids’ light switch surrounds. I currently have them split between home decor – everything else and nursery playroom – nursery wall art.
Could any experienced ad placers suggest a more suitable location to place my adverts in?
I cannot find a category for my kids’ bedroom light switch surrounds. The nearest is home decorations, and the subcategory is wall decorations. Ideally, I need kids’ bedroom decor.
I think you will just have to work with the options available - either Home Decorations, or Nursery and Playroom. There isn’t a category to fit every item as there is such a huge variety of handmade items for sale on Folksy. Having some in each category may be the best option. I wouldn’t worry too much about it!
If I google “Light Switch Surround” then lots of different shops selling them pop up but not Folksy and I think these really should be separately categorised. Drop Foolksy support an email and ask if they could add that as a category for you.
Many thanks for your suggestion. I have just emailed Folksy support and asked for a new subcategory like room decor. I have also suggested a cat that changes to suit current events, i.e., Mother’s Day, Easter, Father’s Day, Halloween and so on. I believe it would make it easier for customers to scroll items under the same event theme.
Wishing you luck. Categories in Folksy are a little bit quirky, to say the least.
I have been asking for Toys to be moved into a more prominent section for years. I sell fabric playscenes and puzzles, and the right section for me is Toys and Activities.
At the moment it’s hidden in Homeware (??? )
Even if a customer decides to look in Homeware for toys, Toys and Activities doesn’t even shown on the menu. They need to know to drill down through to Rooms and Things and then Nursery and Playroom, to finally find it.
And to add insult to injury, there is also a section called Dolls and Collectables that is also in Homeware, but much higher up the heirarchy with it’s own place on the top menu. This is a mix of soft toys for kids, and artisan dolls and bears aimed at adults. So customers will spot that first without realising other types of toys are lost in the depths of Rooms and Things. Even Pet Toys are found more easily from the menu than kids toys.
I have suggested a number of times that toys and activities could be merged with soft toys (teddies and dolls aimed at kids). And Collectables and Keepsake Dolls for adults could then have their own section. There is sound reasoning for this - Trading Standards advice is that toys for under 14s (which legally must be safety tested and UKCA/CE marked) should not be sold next to collectables for adults, as it can confuse customers into buying an untested item for a child by mistake. But the Dolls and Collectables section still combines them
Admin said that my toys will be found through search. To be fair if a customer searches for “toys for children”, my items do appear high in search, but if the search is just “toys” they get a load of pet toys, toy storage, cards and pictures with toy motifs and things that say “I’m not a toy”!
If you have any luck with your request, I may try again.
Wow, that’s like the London underground map. I must admit, despite enjoying Folksy, I do thing the catagories are limiting. Hopefully they will take up my suggestions.
On your suggestion of themed categories Stephen - I’m not sure that would work. In Folksy you can only list in 1 category, so unless you have duplicates that can be split, someone would need to choose between Cards or Easter, or Bunting or Halloween, for example.
Folksy do already have Gift Guides for these special events and many other themes, but they are curated so the Admin team pick items to include, so you can’t add them in yourself. Some of my items have been picked over the years - they tell you in the shop activity section in your dashboard, same place you are notified if someone favourites your item.
But they also have the Theme of the Day - where you can add tags if your item matches, and it’s included in that day’s feature automatically. With 8 items rotating to the home page randomly throughout the day. It can get a bit enormous (I’ve seen it with more than 30 pages ) if the theme is generic, but a more niche theme of the day may only have 3 or 4 pages so buyers more likely to see your item. Today’s theme is gingham, and coincidently one of my aprons has rotated to the home page.
