Cost of advertising

You would definitely need to liaise with Folksy if you were thinking of including their name, logo, website address etc.

I switched to here from ‘The dark side’ in July, I was put under pressure by followers on my social media, Mastodon and Bluesky to do so, people were telling me they would love to buy from me but they won’t buy from ‘The dark side’ it was clear that I had to make the change.

People are increasingly viewing ‘the dark side’ as unethical and full of con artists also their allowing of AI art and products is sickening.

I agree with you about the social stigmas associated with the big three social media, Facebook, Twitter and Instagram. I agree that they will all die. They are becoming increasingly toxic.
I left all three and it’s done me no harm. The year I left Twitter I thought I’d be done for, but ended up with the best Christmas I’ve ever had due to some magnificent support on Mastodon.

Last November around the time of the last US election I left Instagram and Facebook and got similarly magnificent support over Christmas that year from the good people of Bluesky.

I have suggested before but nothing. Think it was the cost but some years ago now.

We would be using our Folksy shop URL’s not the logo. We are entitled to use the url otherwise no point in having a shop.
Plus I feel if they do not feel advertising properly is necessary then down to us to be able to do what we want.
Another shopping site I was on was brilliant for adverting, not for sellers but for buyers. I always feel that Folksy prioritise buyers,

I think perhaps suggesting a crowd funder such as GoFundMe to Folksy for gathering money for advertising, that might be a good way to gather the required funds for an ad. Donations could then be gathered without anyone having to share their bank details with any individual Folksy seller. I think Folksy will have graphics they could use too that would be better than anything we could come up with.
That way a suggested donation of £20 could be added, but smaller shops could put a smaller donation if that is all they could afford.
I really think we would need to get Folksy behind us for this. An annual crowd funder every year before the Christmas rush would be very good for us all.

It all sounds very good but I wonder how many would actually contribute £20, also if Folksy don’t or can’t advertise then there’s not really much point in the rest of us clubbing together to do it once. I do feel it needs to be a more regular thing, as someone else mentioned sharing it once is likely to go unnoticed by most readers and it needs to be more regular. It’s a difficult one and really needs the backing of Folksy because how else can we approach the rest of the sellers, there are only a small proportion active on the forum so we need Folksy to put it out there. I think a small increase in fees would be the best way to raise enough and benefit all sellers and the platform.

Needs to be organised by Folksy, they are the only ones with the reach to get enough people to contribute, especially considering that some businesses will not be able to afford as much as £20.

That’s what I thought Marina, I don’t think a few people contributing would work, it would have to be a small increase everywhere if they would consider raising money this way but they may not want to as they run the risk of losing sellers by doing so. Although the idea is a good one and we need advertising to get the Folksy name out there it has to come from Folksy for it to work.

People in the UK need to see the name and know what it is, they need to see and trust the way they once did with ‘E’

As Caroline said. Her idea has died a death. Folksy will not pay for advertising however it is organised and to be honest I think maybe we as a small team of Folksy sellers, not as Folksy and without Folksy involvement, as all creatives outselves and dedicated to good promotion, would achieive a far more effective advert. But it’s not going to happen. Thank you Caroline for an excellent idea.

I tried Joy but as usual never works out, will never bother again.

Folksy do not advertise their sellers properly social media is dying and getting to be a waste of time. Something needed to be done and I may still look down this route but on a much smaller scale and not involve others.

I would have been interested Caroline @Caroleecrafts, it’s a brilliant idea and sorry you didn’t get enough interest.

Thank you Sharon for your support. I will look next year but not involve anyone on here unless genuine. Will keep your name in mind don’t worry.
Something has to be done and whilst not happy about helping all of Folksy maybe will help the few more.

Definately keep me on the list - sorry I missed it when you initially asked (I’ve been at a craft fayre)

I love the idea of a Folksy Collective approach, where we organise things ourselves when necessary. I did a Et*sy Made Local event a number of years ago in Cardiff - it was brilliant.

I did apply to a local pop-up stall this year - either on my own, or with some local Folksy shop sellers to share the space with me. Unfortunately I got dealt with by the office twerp - he swore he had called me to discuss a date and apparently I said I “needed to get back to him as I was dealing with a family issue”. News to me!!! I think he muddled up the applications , but wasn’t prepared to admit it.

I have to comment that I have not a clue what this weekend’s special event is supposed to achieve.

Sales for Folksy sellers ( zero commission on zero sales saves not a lot🤣). ?

The last pay day weekend before Christmas ?

Comments on here indicate not a lot of sales popping in for anyone !

People are shop shop shopping out there. I’ve bought a dozen Xmas gifts myself, mostly online but the farm shop with Xmas shop was heaving.

People are shopping not visiting craft studios to watch artists at work. That’s something they do in summer to get ideas for Christmas gifts later.

And not a single clickable link in the last week’s worth of FB posts. Barely even a click link to an actual shop

Check out all those FB ads for gorgeous desirable things which pop up all over your feeds ( and some of which you click to see more and sometimes even buy). They have clickable links each and every one of them . Photos of nice things then click and it’s yours.

Now find me an ad which has no clicks…. Hard to remember if you’ve seen any of those.

No big deal I suppose for me as I’m selling quite busily elsewhere. (Clickable links are sooooo 2025😅).

Sorry for those who are not. I really really am. So disappointing when you put your heart and soul into your work and your shop .

I can only recommend you need to do more of your own personal promotion and social media Does work, you just have to grin and bear the aspects of it you don’t like.
