Today is world animal day

Sadly the hedgehog is in serious decline…one of the species that provoked me to start my endangered species, raising money for the people’s trust for endangered species.

Wonderful water bowl, beautiful mosaics.

They are fascinating creatures. Remind me of an artichoke.

sadly it is their scales that they are hunted for.

Thanks so much! I love your bird prints especially the kingfisher! I’ve not yet seen one in the wild…still hoping!

Kingfishers are stunning. I’ve seen loads, but they are tricky to spot. I learnt what they sound like as this is very distinctive. Once you learn what they sound like and you go on a river walk, you hear them fly past and often spot the flash of blue. Hope you spot one soon, they are amazing.

Thanks for the article, fascinating!.. I’m chuffed to bits about my new discovery. Thank you so much for the introduction.

You are so right, maybe we should have #uglyanimalday!

I think there is one…lol!

It was a problem I used to teach kids about at the zoo - everyone loves the big mammals (cough…panda…) but it’s so much harder to get people on board to save small unknowns. You are always split between getting visitors and money for people coming to see the non endangered animals like meerkats and the actually endangered ones like the partula snail!

I used to work with a little 3 banded armadillo called Dillon - very cute! Not a pangolin but close!

The up-side though is if you protect the big mammals habitat e.g jaguar all the other species will benefit too uglies and all!

@moondaisies and @talkofthetownparties Yeah #uglyanimalday would certainly help. There is a Ugly Animal Preservation Society, raising awareness of the uglier species.

Your right @talkofthetownparties about protecting the big mammals. My husband is reading a book called Feral about rewilding Britain. It has a bit in there about reintroducing the wolf to Britain and how reintroducing the wolf will benefit other species by the way the wolf pushes deer populations along and prevents over grazing, allowing saplings to survive and provide food for many species that are suffering from the effects of over grazing. Fascinating stuff.

Great article about the armadillo…Lucky to have worked with such a special species. looks pretty similar to my newly discovered Pangolin.

Yeah I used to teach about wolf reintroductions etc (sad miss my old job!) I don’t think we will see wolf reintroductions here any time soon maybe Lynx is more promising. You only have to look at yellowstone to see how important they are, most people don’t realise wolves were only reintroduced there recently!

Oh well better go before I start ranting…here’s a classic…poor blob fish…
