Wow! I’ve only ever heard the foxes here never seen them and we don’t have badgers - wish we did! But with such deluxe food, I’m not surprised they’re queuing up to be fed!! Bet your place has 5 stars amongst the local wildlife!
lucky foxes and badgers, I used to feed our fox, but the neighbours don’t like it
will all that human food not upset their digestive system?
I shouldn’t think that human food would bother them We once had the local “badger watch” group come up to see them and they told us that the favourite foods for badgers was meat pie and chips !!! They also love peanuts apparently. We have lived here for 18 years now and they still keep coming, so they must be thriving!
Yes, I agree! Well, badgers are omnivores and will eat pretty much anything and foxes likewise. Just as dogs are supposed to be carnivores but will eat almost anything a human will, foxes are successful for the same reason. If it’s available they’ll have it! Both species are remarkably robust and I’m sure they’re thriving on all that lovely steak! Obviously, putting down sugary stuff would be very bad for them and their teeth, but that’s not on the menu, so it’s fine
the only thing that they all seem to leave behind is salad…they don’t seem very keen on tomatoes or even apples…so we throw those over the fence for the horses in the field…
About a month ago I had lots of toad action. But unfortunately one of my crazy dogs has developed a taste for them - foaming mouth and all! Still, I’ll placate myself with the lesser redpolls I’ve seen on my bird feeder -only for one day, but it was worth sitting watching them!
Daft animal! I wonder whether the dog was getting high on the toxins?!
Such a lovely thread! Can I join in? Where we live there is a very large and thriving Red Kite population. They swoop so low over the houses you can see the patterns of the plumage on their heads. They are just stunning. At the moment, we have a pair of black birds nesting in our back garden. Can’t wait until the little ones fledge. The other week, I was gardening at the front of the house when a juvenile robin came and joined me. No red breast yet, just spotted feathers. He wasn’t worried at all by me. It was such a treat.
How sweet of you to ask! Of course, pleased to hear from you!
Red kites are fab! I was so excited to see some between Royston and Baldock, but haven’t seen them over Cambridge yet. I hope that they’ll get here soon! I have seen sparrowhawks (in my garden), kestrels (very near by) and buzzards (cruising around high up) and I’ve seen one of the resident tawny owls sitting on our neighbours house!
I have been having an unusual visitor feeding (for my Garden) on my nuts these past 2 mornings, a woodpecker It looks so clumsy hanging onto my feeder, makes a lovely change to sparrows and starlings!
Last year we had a greater spotted woodpecker that would drum on our next door neighbour’s tv aerial! Its behaviour seemed so weird it even landed up in the local paper!! Actually, the bird wasn’t misguided at all, it wasn’t pecking for food, it was drumming just as other birds sing, staking it’s claim on its territory and trying to attract a mate. The tv aerial happened to be nicely resonant and so, much better for getting its message heard. Actually, I should be calling him, him not it, the females don’t need all that fuss!
I’ve seen a greater spotted on our apple tree recently but sadly, no more eccentric drumming… There’s a local green woodpecker too. We’re very lucky, not all parts of Cambridge have so many trees and I don’t suppose they get many woodpeckers either!
we think it is a greater spotted wood pecker too with red and green on it?
No, you’ve got a green woodpecker. They’re very attractive with a deep green back, limey green front and a jazzy red cap. The greater spotted has a natty black and white colour scheme with a red flash at the back of its head and another on its rump. It’s smaller than the green. The greater spotted is about the size of a starling, and not as bold as the green which is about the size of a collared dove and I even see it on the ground in our garden sometimes.
Hiya we have a wild rabbit who visits for dandelions I tried to put a picture above but it didn’t work first time on this new forum and finding it confusing will try again. x
Picture of the bunny. x
“my” fox is back, sunbathing this afternoon. He let me take quite a few photos (from a bedroom window) watching me carefully!
We get quite a lot of insects and birds in our garden, toads and frogs, the occasional hedgehog, but I think our dog keeps the foxes, badgers and deer out.
Love your foxy photo! I’d love to see “our” foxes, but they’re too shy!
What a joyful sunflower! My garden was alive with bees too, a couple of weeks ago - they love the comfry. But they’ve all buzzed off now…
Still, the lavender ought to be out in a week or two
