Has Folksy changed what you are allowed to to sell?

I have tibetan silver butterflies. I have earring hooks. Watch this space

Panic not. Folksy has been here a long time. Not much less than Etsy and still trugs along . If you have genuine handmade lovely things to sell and if you put in the hard graft to get your shop and lovely things seen then no neason why you shouldnt sell. Just every now and then there is an influx of errrrrrr not handmade, copyright, made not in Britain, assembled .. to nane but a few transgressions and we sellers, who actually sell proper British handmade get a bit cheesed off with seeing this stuff mixed in with our hard crafted and beautiful things.

Absolutely Lois, that’s how it usually ends up, ā€˜we ’ the artists on Folksy are reprimanded for saying what we feel, for trying to keep Folksy a handcrafted site and we are the same ones who spend our time helping Folksy to keep it that way by checking out and reporting those shops that should not be on here. I don’t understand why there isn’t a procedure in place for checking new shops before they go live, once the initial questionnaire has been set up as a template it should be easy to look through. For example, photographs of your work or a link to your social media page showing your work, short description of your work etc. It doesn’t have to be pages long but it might stop a lot of sellers joining that do not belong on here. Things are only going to get worse especially now we have AI to contend with as well, it’s only going to be a matter of time before we end up like ebay and etsy unless something changes. Folksy are always putting social media posts out about being a handcrafted site, it would be nice to keep it that way … unless of course it comes down to fees, by vetting sellers there will not be as many new sellers joining so less income for Folksy !

Hi, Thank you so much. You have an amazing shop, really lovely, such gorgeous bears. I’m just trying to get to grips with the forum here, it’s a big learning curve joining a new place.

The worse thing for me is I find myself questioning every new shop. I’ve very little trust any more, which means I, personally, will be very unlikely to buy from anyone that hadn’t been here a long time. This is how organisations die, I suppose. Lost trust equals lost customers. Remember Ratners?

Hi, Just getting to grips with this forum, just worked out how to reply to people.

Totally understand…when you put so much time and effort into items it’s horribly frustrating.

I am now spitting feathers and fuming. This is beyond a joke now.

If Folksy were a curated site with a practical and effective vetting procedure I would consider re-opening my shop. Over the years I have been here, many people have continued to ask for a vetting process. It hasn’t happened, so my shop remains unstocked.

I know exacrly what you are referring too. Too obvious not to,

I’ve just emailed urgent at folksy and suggested they have some shops that need vetting.

I’m so darn tired.

And yes, considering closing my shop. Been a relatively consistent top 40 seller for the last year, but it’s mostly been classes and I can set them up elsewhere super easily.

This is why I pay my plus account monthly now, rather than annually. What am I still doing here?

Edited. Plus account cancelled. Stock will be allowed to expire as it runs out, and I will move my classes over to an event site. No more fees from me. What a way to end.

Thank you very much, yes there’s a lot to learn but you are obviously doing ok with it all.

That is sad to hear.

It is bad enough when we see non handmade shops appearing, but it is doubly bad when this leads to us seeing genuine handmade shops disappearing. That makes the balance tip even quicker.

Oh that’s a real shame Lois, it really is sad to see another genuine handmade shop moving on only to be replaced with mass produced items. Wouldn’t it be lovely to get it back to the handmade platform it once was.

I am also increasingly concerned about non compliant toys. This is a nightmare and a concern for anyone buying one in good faith.

Agreed. The solution has already been suggested, and presumably rejected, multiple times. I have no idea how to run a site like Folksy, but other sites can do it, so it’s not impossible. Just undesirable.

Thanks Debbie. To be fair, it’s really just been my workshops that have sold over the last year. I was just lazy and sold here because I knew how it worked, and folksy were kind enough to add a workshop category, so I might as well use it!

I was lazy, but now I’ll just have to learn how to use eventbrite or another similar site. No biggie, I’ll just have to learn. My handcrafted items, I’ll see if I can have a shop on my own website instead.
