Great idea to have this as a stand alone thread  I’ve been selling on here for a few years and have never (to my knowledge) made it onto the front page or gift guides but try to follow the tips for good photos to maximise my chances.
I have tried several backgrounds for my photos but at the moment have settled on this one, it is a pale grey sheet as I find cards difficult to show on a white background but would appreciate peoples comments,

This second one shows a ‘lifestyle’ shot that I also use in my listings if I’ve not used my 5 images for close-ups.

Definitely looks better straight, I struggled with this until I discovered the ‘straighten’ function in picasa

Dee I much prefer your second photo, it’s squarer and the card looks whiter.

If it’s included with the pendant I wouldn’t worry about it showing (in fact I would make sure it is) I would assume if a chain is showing it is included in the price.

I’d fill the square with your colourful quilt, at an angle similar to the third or fourth photo in your listing - it’s so eyecatchingly beautiful

Thanks Stephanie, in the first shot the card is propped up on a plate stand but in the second it’s stood up on a shelf (much like you would with a card) I might have to think about swapping the order of my pictures.

Fab! I use paintshop pro, which has a perspective correction tool in it. Very handy for paintings as it’s virtually impossible to take photos that are straight on all sides.

I use picasa photo editing (it came as standard on our laptop) and on there is a section on light balance which includes a ‘pick’ tool that you can drag onto your photos and click on anything white, I make sure that if there is nothing white on my card that I place a piece of white paper in the corner of my shot then use this to alter the colours before cropping the picture then just crop it out, hope this helps

I recently swapped my style from this

to this

and this

My intention was for the photos to be more eyecatching - when a customer is faced with a page of seascape paintings I want mine to jump out. However opinion is divided about whether the wood is too distracting, some say yes, some say no - what do you think?

I personally prefer the plainer background, there are too many lines on the wood and it draws your eye away from the painting.

I agree with Sara, the lines are a little distracting however I think the picture stands out more on the warmer colour of the wood, do you have a larger ‘plain’ piece of the wood you could use instead?

My photos vary from ones taken in amongst my rabbity stuff on top of my china cabinet, like this:

To close ups like this:

And layouts like this:

And then the paintings and shed signs tend to be like this:

I’ve got a new camera since taking most of these shots, so I know I need to re-do many of them, but with over 600 listings it’s a time consuming job! I suppose I ought to have a set style of photo, but I do like experimenting with how to show items, especially in the summer when I can take photos outdoors.

And I seem to have forgotten how to just link a photo and not have the blurb at the side too…must be my age!

Wish I knew how to get the photo with the blub, all I can do is add the photo

Just paste the item URL. Simples!

Funny you should say that, I’ve literally just put my coat on to go hunt around the garage

Sara I really like your close ups with your hand - which is odd as I stopped doing that with my own photo’s ages ago. Yet they do appeal to me, so maybe I should re-introduce them as part of the photo line-up.

I also like your pet portrait photos, they stand out well.

Your other two I’m less sure of - I’m having to squint a bit to see the item, perhaps because they’re a similar colour to the background?

I hate photographing my colouring books and notepaper sets - they don’t look good against white, as you say they blend in too much. I need a nice colour for backgrounds for those items, but can never make up my mind which to use - the joys of being and indecisive Piscean hee hee hee!

These are some earrings I have just listed, I have been trying to lighten my photo’s but not sure if they are light enough

How’s this? I found some pieces of laminate flooring. I’m not sure it’s warm enough myself, although that might be the appalling light…it is going dark now after all.
