Scam emails for tax refund

(Minerva) #1

Be aware of scam emails about tax refunds. Now is the season you are going to see quite a few of them.
I’m sure most of you know but for new people who might not be aware.

More info in the HMRC website:

I’m pretty sure that HMRC contact people by Letter, when they want to let them know about tax refunds, completing returns etc. They don’t e-mail you about anything like this. Therefore, if you get an e-mail from HMRC, about anything specific to yourself and your tax affairs, it’s almost certainly a scam!

I had one of these emails last year and my first reaction was to google the email address it came from. The first link wast ot HMRC page about scams!
Double check everything that is about your money, no matter how trivial it is, we never know to what new mischief the hackers are now…

I am sending HMRC (Phishing@hmrc.gsi.gov.uk) the email addresses I get so they can add them to their list.
