Thoughts on postage

So far it’s not been one bit of an issue since I haven’t had any international orders at all :joy:

I’ve just made the decision to offer postage at a flat rate for all my pieces and updated accordingly. Like @SashaGarrett I also sell through galleries who ask that all other sales platforms physical and online have similar price levels so I have to take that into account too. Sometimes I just feel lost in a sea of bubble wrap…

Well it is a lot of faff with customs forms :rofl::rofl:

Not unless the customer has requested (and paid for) tracking, or it’s something irreplaceable (sometimes I stamp commissions on the customer’s own spoons), or of very high value, or that I really, REALLY can’t face stamping again. Generally in the time I would spend claiming from RM I can have made enough other things to be able to afford to replace the odd thing that’s been lost. And I mostly don’t have proof of postage anyway - in sixteen years of selling online and posting with RM I have only ever had a couple of items genuinely go missing so mostly I’ve stuck with my lockdown-induced system of just putting a large letter stamp on and putting it in the postbox and hoping for the best!

The mental images I now have :bubbles::bubbles::bubbles::bubbles:

When I sold internationally I usually found that if someone wants your item enough, they’ll pay the postage. Folks in the US in particular are used to high postage costs

Interesting…and I agree it’s soooo time consuming putting in a claim

I only ever did it once and it was such a faff I’ve never bothered again!

I very much like the term Postage Included.
Much more honest than Free Shipping as we all know it isn’t.

I add on postage as I also do a lot of in person markets & need to keep my prices the same. I could increase my prices to include postage costs all over but felt that this would be unfair to people coming to markets.

I totally agree Helen, and always use p&p included.

Folksy did a post on this some time ago and they found on smaller/ affordable items people look for free postage however on larger/ more expensive items they were happy to pay postage as an extra. I don’t offer free postage I charge seperately as there is no such thing as free but my items are more expensive, I have found a way of keeping the cost down and managed to reduce my postage costs and set the majority of my items to £3.95 tracked 48 parcel post, additional just £1, this gives £150 insurance so covers my expensive bears and if they order more than one I pay the extra and upgrade to special delivery. I think it depends on the value of the item you are selling.

Thanks Debbie, I’ve started to change my listings back to having postage on them… maybe keeping the smaller items with pp included for the time being. X

That sounds like a good idea Alison and what Folksy found to work as well

I like that Helen, although when I see ‘free postage’ my brain says no it’s not, it’s just included in the price.

I actually don’t mind either way, if I really want something, as long as the price for postage is fair.

I set free postage for domestic items on the E site but it made absolutely no difference at all, so I put all the postages back!

I’ve changed postage on my larger items back to separate from the listing price to see how that goes. I’m sure it’s not going to make a huge difference but it feels the right thing to do at the moment!!

I used to charge postage. I did not increase my prices when I removed the postage charge, so my items are genuinely free postage.

Oh my word, that sounds expensive :astonished:

To be truly ‘Free Postage’ you would be selling the item for the price of the materials, so no profit, then you pay for the postage, so making a loss.
