She’s not a calligrapher but Elly of @EllyRowbothamPrintmaker might know one based in Cornwall. Any suggestions Elly?
Oh Crikey, Jack Trowbridge immediately jumps to mind, but sadly he died about 3 years ago. He was a wonderful letterforms artist who had been apprentice to Eric Gill’s nephew. Jack was also a jeweller. I used to spend hours talking letterforms with him - I have an envelope he gave me addressed to him in gorgeous calligraphy. His partner Hilary was involved in the Hypatia Trust in Penzance which is a women’s Literary organisation (bit obscure, but if you contact them they might know). Jack & Hillary were very well connected internationally with superb calligraphers but I can’t remember the name of the calligraphers organisation that Jack was a member of - I’m sure some were in Cornwall - I’ll have a dig through my archives to see if I can find it. If not there’s the Cornwall Craft Association who might be able to point you in the right direction.
I didn’t know you were at Kresen Kernow Amanda @bowerbirddesigns - I watched that place being renovated ready to become the Archive centre when I was teaching in Redruth. I also spent a good few days trawling through old Correspondence between Edward Hain & his solicitors, looking at old mine maps & contracts, as well as Architect drawings by Silvanus Trevail, when the Archives were still in Truro. Maybe we’ll bump into each other over archives one day!
Hello Sasha @SashaGarrett hope all is good with you
I think I saw that envelope with your one of many postcards on instagram. Thanks for all the other info, hopefully that gives Amanda a starting point in her quest.
My OH loved his puffin card that I gave him on our anniversary (having managed to keep it secret from him for several months), I’m a bit up and down - normally I’d be in the midst of christmas markets so super busy but they’ve all been cancelled and the internet has slumped a bit (a lot really) so fingers crossed it will pick up soon. (Doesn’t help that I don’t like the cold, dark days either but don’t/ can’t have a winter sun escape booked to cheer me up.)
Thanks @SashaGarrett and @EllyRowbothamPrintmaker ! Yes I do work at KK - it’s quite fun! Apparently the Activities manager got an email from the Gorsedh - they are the ones looking for a calligrapher - so I will pass your suggestions on, thank you!
There’s also The Guild of Ten, they may know. Surprised the Gorsedh can’t conjure a calligrapher!!
Yes, you did! I love that envelope it reminds me of Jack who I miss (I used part of one of the 'E’s from it in my logo). Glad your OH liked his Puffins & impressive you managed to keep it from him for so long - yes these lockdowns are a right ol’fun killer. Online-only is all very well for selling but I miss boring people to tears about my printmaking at markets! Are you going to do the Folksy/Pedddle Xmas market?
I miss the summer for cycling without wrapping up - waiting for a break in the mizzle so we can take advantage of the empty roads again.
Hope you get some sun in Cambs
Take care
Hello Amanda,
I am a Calligrapher based in Edinburgh but I’d suggest that your friend should contact the Calligraphy and Lettering Arts’ Society (or CLAS) - www,clas.co.uk - as they may well have a member of the Society in Cornwall.
Perhaps you have already found someone by now?
Best wishes
Clare
No I haven’t yet, thank you Clare I will pass that website on to my colleague!!
Happy to help.
