Are you qualified?

When recruiting staff and reviewing CV’s I have always thought that a candidate who has completed university (or any type of accreditation) shows commitment to a process. It doesn’t matter to me what the initials are beside someone’s name, just that they have actually have the stick-to-it-ness to complete something.

I have an Honours BA in Economics and a LLB. I have not practiced as a lawyer for the past 20 years but have never regretted the decision to go for it. I paid my own way as although there are scholarships and grants available to students in Canada, tuition was traditionally paid for by the student. Conversely, my husband went straight into an old style apprenticeship in Sheffield at 15 and now runs a research laboratory demonstrating that higher education is not necessary to rise in the working world.

silvapagan I was responding to what Brenda said.
I did City and Guilds Silk painting by distance learning, I don’t know if it is still available.

Hello, bit of a newbie here. Opened a shop a few years ago then didn’t do much with it, but I’m back and raring to go.

I have an advanced GNVQ in Art & Design and a degree in Fashion Design, neither of which I’ve ever used in a job, but I think they’ve given me a good standing for my business even if I’m not actually painting or dressmaking right now.

Gosh! After reading all the above comments I now feel totally inadequate. Everyone seems to have a degree or a qualification of some sort, even if it’s just O Levels. I have nothing! I was desperately unhappy at school and left as soon as I could and couldn’t even face going in for exams. But I have been sewing since the age of 16 and therefore have amassed a wealth of knowledge in the last 40 years on the subject. Laura Ashley and Cath Kidston never got a degree!

I once got told by an old manager that if anything, your degree helps get you your first job and after that no one cares - it’s all about your experience. If I could do it again I’d more than likely not bother with uni either.
