Costing for hand painted greetings cards

I send my pictures in ready-made boxes with bubble wrap and paper to protect them. I have sent two to the USA (on the ‘other’ site) and they arrived intact. I also send my glass suncatchers in ready -made boxes and I have not had a problem with them either (one got to the USA in good shape). I prefer to have proper boxes for those but my other gifts I often send in recycled boxes/cardboard…using copious amounts of old brown paper and bubble wrap to protect them! I do worry that glass items will break so I also have insurance just in case anyone is injured by an item that has broken on the way. :grimacing:

I don’t send outside the UK as I’m unwilling to take the risk of breakages. Thanks for your info Jo… am I right in thinking you mean that your public liability insurance covers for injury to someone as a result of broken glass?

I am guilty of undercharging…at £1.25 per card
I have been selling for over 60 years and it is the only way that works for me.
Trust me, I have tried higher prices but no sales.
I make a small profit on each card and those pennies mount up quickly.
Yes, I could wait for sales on higher priced cards but while while others are waiting, I am on my way to the bank.
I paint very quickly and so I need a fast turnover or I would be snowed under with stock…as it is I have over 450 items in my shop.
I learnt various lessons over the years…standing at a craft fair with cards and people walking past my table and buying dozens of cards from the lady next to me at 50p a time…It really upset me at the time until someone said…if you can’t beat them, join them.
I immediately put my prices down and have never regretted it.
On the reverse of this I have seen badly made cards for sale at ridiculously high prices…So it can be looked at it from a different perspective.
My neighbours all knock at my door and buy ten or fifteen at a time…if they were at higher prices, they would go to town and buy from the card market etc.
I KNOW that mine are original works of art but a lot of people don’t care, they just want a card…
At the end of the day it is up to each individual and we are all fighting for sales in these difficult times…

You do make lovely cards GweddusArt. I think you make a really good point regarding lower prices and more sales - I currently have free postage so the price looks expensive but I wonder if it’s better to have a lower price and then charge postage on top? I think I’m going to have to change all my card listings!

@teabreaks that’s a great point. I have lowered my price. I do have quite a few cards that if I dropped the price I would have cash and not stock  your artwork reminds me of Bob Ross
