Folksy search

Try to find @LilacDaisy by typing in “lilac”, “daisy”, or “lilac daisy”. You cannot.

I am not willing to do any more searching, that should have been done before it went live, but I would like to point out that “wider public customers” are not insiders, like the “seller-customers” are, and they don’t know how to get round things in order to find what they want. Folksy should concentrate on those more, and widen up the circle, instead of closing it down. Couple of weeks is an awful lot of time for a shopping platform not to deliver in my opinion, in a such fast world, with so many alternatives.

It does all look and feel rather half-baked, doesn’t it? Is a functional site too much to ask for?

Hmmm… OK:

Don’t like:

  • The price stickers (although I can understand that they may be helpful - but I guess better use of the filter, or making them feel less ‘flash sale’ would be an improvement. It could be the colour, it could be that it overlays the image, but either way it doesn’t look nice).
  • The huge gift guide interruption (on every page) which makes it feel like search has finished - especially as there are gaps at the end of the first section above the gift guide, it makes it feel as if the results have ended. If you wanted to include those, maybe they should be the same size as the rest of the listings?
  • The results (searched ‘Family Tree’ and got lots of things showing just because they have ‘Family’ and ‘Tree’ in their title/tags which means almost all results were totally irrelevant).
  • That what we’ve been told about how to get found in search may be totally different now, meaning if we want to show up (and be relevant) I’m guessing we’ll all have to amend our listings. I’d have thought creating a search feature that aligns with your existing guidance would be better.
  • That shop names are no longer showing.
  • Searching for shops brings up one page of shops (randomly chosen I’m guessing - they change when you refresh the page), which makes it feel as if that’s all there is - it doesn’t encourage you to type in the search bar as you’re immediately presented with a page of shops. Just weird. I’d rather just see an empty page with the search bar, and/or an alphabet list - so if you want to find ‘PhotoFairytales’ you go to ‘P’ and then drill down through the list?

Like:

  • The speed of results.

Would like:

  • More filters (and as someone mentioned, to have the word ‘filters’ rather than the symbol so that it’s more obvious).

Unsure of:

  • The random shapes of results…

Wondering:

  • If the old search should be reinstated whilst these niggles (and there seems to be a lot of those) are ironed out in the background?
  • Why there’s only 7 pages of results - or, conversely, why there are 7 pages of results every time even when none of the results are relevant?

The whole disappearing from searches whilst on holiday mode has always irritated me BUT what really annoys me is when some of us are on holiday we are invisible and to a potential customer or return customer that means we no longer sell on Folksy but there are others that still show in the searches and one after years of being in holiday mode, so one rule for all would be better that’s the same for everyone.
Why we have to fall off the radar because our shop is in holiday mode i don’t know, all we need to do is have the line about the shop taking a break on our shop front (which needs to be much larger text because you can’t see it on a phone. On other sites you can still purchase but at checkout it says the order may be delayed as the owner is away until x day.

As for the search facility I’ve given up with it, it just doesnt work and I won’t be wasting anymore time on it.

I just did a search for Home Decor. Three pages in it’s mostly the same seller.

Here’s a great example of one shop domination.

Try Handmade Gift … A really generic search which is probably common on a Handmade Gift shopping site like Folksy.

You will see what I mean

When you click onto the search field, is everyone getting the same items each time? I’ve done quite a few searches now, and each time, it initially shows me the same old stuff.

I also think more work needs to be done about the shop search. My shop is OasiscraftUK. I would expect it to come up if i typed in Oasiscraft and/or Oasis. Instead when I search for Oasiscraft, no shop is found and when I type in Oasis, a shop called red dragon metal art comes up… can’t really see a link in names here :woman_shrugging: (I like their items though, so thanks for showing me something totally out of my norm!)

I tried to reply with just :scream: :scream: :scream: but posting requires a minimum of 10 characters.

Try Rabbit..
At least 17 items from a shop that has been temporarily closed on holiday mode for at least 2 years
And a page full of the same design card…I could go on …
I must have missed my rabbits !

Yes it seems one shop has the monoply of the rabbit search. Try searching 'Gifts for Dads ’
I was lost for words and so disappointed in the complete loss of the Folksy “Handmade” “Handcrafted” ethos.

I decided to try drilling down into a search using the filters (I’m using my phone, android).

I make jewellery so I thought I’d look for earrings & then filter the results.

Goodness knows why, but you can’t filter by all the categories that you choose from when you create your listings. You get 10 filters to choose from, instead of the 39 us sellers get to catergorise our listing under!

The logic in this completely baffles me & quite frankly makes me a little upset. I’ve spent time and effort making my listings appealing, but now they won’t show up under the filters because I’ve chosen a category that doesn’t come up for customers when searching using the filters.

Why on earth would you leave out three quarters of the categories, @Folksyadmin are you purposefully trying to alienate your sellers and make sure they don’t get seen?!

I’m now going to have to go through all my listings & change the categories to ones that do actually show up in the search filters.

It may be that the new search has different categories and everything isn’t yet aligned… Could also be that the new search ‘tree’ just has broader branches and all the smaller categories are still safely hanging off it :deciduous_tree: :slightly_smiling_face: I would hold fire before you waste your precious time updating anything, I have a feeling there will be more change / improvements coming soon :two_hearts:

I’m definitely not updating or changing anything until this settles down - there’s probably going to be lots of tweaks to this ( :crossed_fingers: :folded_hands:) so there doesn’t seem to be any point yet.

I just hope it doesn’t harm sales for everyone in the meantime (especially as this month is pretty bad for many already).

I just searched for gemstone jewellery, 1 of my items appeared over the whole 7 pages, whilst another shop had 4 or 5 items per page! I don’t see why it is so difficult to write a code that checks the shop name & doesn’t allow more than 1 item per shop.

If potential customers have searched rabbits (especially as Easter is coming)or bear..or dolls the past few days they will have gone elsewhere unless they wanted a card or aceo as there were dozens of those or wanted to choose items from a shop that isn’t open.
I realise there will be more changes and this is just a test run but if you want a rabbit it would be logical to search for rabbits…customers do not put long lengthy descriptive words into a search bar they use keywords such as rabbit !
To be honest it really feels like it’s a waste of time and hard work if our items don’t even come up in searches especially when they are our main items…bears from a bear shop. I have been really fed up the past few days which stems back to this, I just hope it’ sorted soon before customers shop elsewhere or I will be looking to move.
When a new system is rolled out we obviously expect some minor flaws and nothing is going to be perfect but rabbits and bears are not complicated searches there are no long specific details there.

It should bring up All items, every one that is applicable to Gem stones right across Folksy and yes mix them up if possible and if it can’t do that at least it needs to alternate what it shows first not the same items for days on end like it currently is.

I think what’s depressing me is that Folksy are promoting why customers are choosing them over E and number 1 Everything’s genuinely handmade - you won’t find any mass-produced ‘gifts’ here.
Every item is made by the person selling it.

And yet a search for gifts for him produced t-shirt after t-shirt with 100 available. Am I missing something?

Ive been feeling the same Debbie.
One of my items actually appeared at thd very end of page 7. I checked again this morning to see if anything had changed and to make me feel even worse Ive now been knocked off by a shop with “lino style prints” its hard enough as a printmaker competing with giclee prints and digital prints. For someone to do this is really disheartening. I have quite a few prints hidden at the moment as i have an exhibition. I was going to list a few new items but just cant find the enthusiasm.
I hope we get some feedback from Folksy soon
