Hi, I’ve noticed that when I upload images the titles I’ve given to them before uploading changes to the title of the listed item. It seems to be the same with other shops too so potentially you could have 8 images for an item all with the same title. I would have thought this is detrimental to SEO, Google etc?
What do you think?
I just looked at my frog https://folksy.com/items/7503441-Frog-Suncatcher-Stained-Glass-Handmade-052-Tree-Frog
first 2 photos and yes they have been changed to the title of the listing with a prefix listing number and a suffix number for each photo within the listing
i.e.
7503441-Frog-Suncatcher-Stained-Glass-Handmade-052-Tree-Frog-0.jpg
7503441-Frog-Suncatcher-Stained-Glass-Handmade-052-Tree-Frog-1.jpg
The names are therefore unique… even if only differentiated by a single number but I know that searches for my glass are good so it must work ok.
On my computer they were called.
FROG 052 #2009 FREE 16.00.jpg
FROG 052 #2009 FREE 16.00 (10).jpg
I’ve no problem with that as as they are they are meaningful and searchable and actually better than my image names which are entirely meaningful to me (frog number 52, made in September 2020 and cost £16) but not as useful if someone searches for a frog suncatcher.
@JOYSofGLASS yes in your example it does work to your advantage but I like to give my images different titles in the hope that they might be picked up by different search terms. To be honest I’m not completely SEO savvy so I might be talking complete rubbish
It was just something I’d noticed.

Actually I think what we have with Folksy is really pretty good. I can’t remember when they did change to meaningful names using the title for the photos but it is a vast improvement on what went before.~~
I thought I could see when it changed by looking at a really old listing (I’ve been here since 2009) but when they changed to meaningful they must have renamed everything including long expired

Though you and I know that meaningful names are the best thing since sliced bread for getting your images and therefore listings searchable and findable… the message does not get through to a lot of people …and they continue to upload their photos with the name allocated on their device.
I just downloaded 2 photos each from a listing on 3 other sites… only 1 uses meaningful names… the other two use either names allocated by the system or by the seller… I can’t tell which as my shop on E*** is so old and has been on holiday so long my expired listing photos are not downloadable for me to see…

You can see that the NO*** images both have the same name though they are different images from the same listing…so as I said I think Folksy have this one as good as it can be. Everyone gets meaningful names even those who may not bother to assign them themselves before uploading.

I do always try to remember to add Title, Subject and Tags to the Properties of my photos before I upload them. I haven’t checked whether they survive the upload process, nor do I actually know whether that helps in any sort of Search… @JOYSofGLASS you are tech-savvy - do you know whether that helps?

I don’t think they survive as the uploaded photos are all renamed once there, to the listing title. I’m sure those newly titled photos provide excellent SEO for us.

Yes I can definitely understand the logic of it as you say a lot of people don’t understand the importance of properly titled photos for SEO purposes, so some sort of descriptive title is a lot better than a row of automatically generated numbers.
I am so glad to hear they do this, as I had got really lazy about renaming my images.
Sales are good, so it must be working.

Actually, I just tried downloading one of the images from a listing, and yes, the properties have survived. Obviously not the Filename, and I do think the Folksy-generated filename is much better than my local ones.
That Is useful to know. Thanks Helen.

Must admit I can be a bit lazy about changing the titles (not sure why as it doesn’t take long to do when I’m editing the photos) I was never sure if it made a difference but f it does I just need to get myself into the habit
