New Tax Information and reporting to HMRC

As many if you know, Folksy have requested details from us to enable compliance for the HMRC. More info here:

This is something that must be done legally they are not asking for the fun if it.

I would be interested to know if people do not complete where needed what will Folksy do.

I seem to have missed this, what info do Folksy need from us and when was it requested? Thanks.

You should have a pink banner on the top of your dashboard. If you sell under 30 items in a year not sure you will get one.

Mine is now blue as completed but yours should be in pink

You should also have an Email from Folksy. Check your spam.
Correction. You wonā€™t have got anything as not needed .
You only get it if you have sold enough to qualify. That is 30 order lines ( not orders or total quantity) or more than Ā£1740 I think in value.

Out of curiosity, since it is reporting to the ā€œHMRCā€, why is the exact amount in euros, and whatever comes to pounds, and not the opposite? I saw it on the Folksy blog as well, and I cannot get my head round itā€¦ even if using international platforms, the amount we deal with is in pounds?

Something to do with the EU. A whole year is their tax year. Thought we lived in the UK!

I thought the same, hence the confusionā€¦ so much for Brexit

I donā€™t believe the actual figures of sales will be of any use to HMRC . They just want to find sellers over the registration threshold. .how can they possibly equate an annual just passed calendar 12 months with a tax year Aor to Mar which does not need tax returns submitted until Jan Next year. .they canā€™t !
And if anyone thinks HMRC have sufficient capacity to check at that silly level then HMRC is overstaffed !
As not yet had acceptance of my return submitted weeks ago I suspect they are currently exceedingly busy

I donā€™t have the Pink Banner on my Dashboard. But I donā€™t fall under the Blue Banner.

Ah I see yes that makes sense. I am way below the tax threshold in my earnings so far. Thanks for clarifying, was thinking Iā€™d missed something important.

I had one to fill in as Iā€™d sold more than 30 items in the last year, but on checking I havenā€™t so im not sure why I had to do oneā€¦

I started making a few pieces when i retired from ā€˜proper workā€™ as a hobby and only opened my shop to get rid of surplus items which hadnt been given away. I was thinking about possible running down stock this year with possibility of closure at the end of this year. This new level of bureaucracy is the last nail in the coffin
lid.

I completely agree, every day I get more and more disillusioned with selling anything at all, :frowning:

That is what I thought no more stupid rules, huh what do I know.

I do not think HMRC will bother too much unless not registered and excessively over the threshold. Last time spoke to my cousin they are to their ears and this legislation will be like an annoying wasp, buzz, buzz. Swat dead!

If we make stuff to sell we should be registered as a business, and if we make sufficient profit we should pay tax on it. HMRC are just trying to plug a loophole. Whether this is happening in the clearest, fairest and most efficient way is a moot point but the principle hasnā€™t changed. And yes, I completely agree that selling online isnā€™t what it used to be, there are so many things we need to comply with and Iā€™m really sorry for anyone just starting out and trying to navigate it all, I miss those happy days when we could sell our crafts to pretty much anyone anywhere!

I was not inferring anyone should sell without registering with the HMRC. I have been registered self employed since about 1990.
I just know from chatting to people on the frontline, this is a EU thing and they are up to their ears in work as it is.

They seem to have counted Order lines. Not number of orders and not total quantity.
My count is given as 112 but which surprised me as in quantity terms iā€™ve sold 113, I spotted that I have one order where I had sold a qty of 2 of the same thing which accounts for the difference of 1 as I do my spreadsheet by total quantity not order count or order lines. .

Donā€™t forget that this is Jan to Dec 2024 not the normal UK accounting year.,

I am not registered with HMRC because I know I will never sell enough to even come close to having anything to declare? I did check before I started my Folksy shop that the limit was still Ā£1000 PA to be honest I havenā€™t even come close to Ā£1000 in the four years Ive been here in total so I canā€™t imagine the tax man is going to be that interested in me and my micro business.
