Setting up and selling

Hi, we are really into crafts and renovating old furniture, we are thinking of making the next step of trying to sell our wares. Any advice where to start like do we need insurance for trying out at some fairs, paying taxes ect. Any help and advice would be greatly appreciated

Go visit HMRC website for legal stuff.

Speak to the craft fairs you want to do re their insurance requirements.

I would say that some sort of public and product liability insurance is essential if you’re selling your work to the public. Most craft fairs will insist on it and will want to see your paperwork. HMRC are very helpful, and the government website has a very useful step by step guide to setting up as a sole trader and when you need to register: Set up as a sole trader: step by step - GOV.UK

There’s a thread about insurance somewhere in this forum, let me see whether I can find it…

ETA: yup, here you go: Insurance recommendations?

There is also loads of advice on here about selling at fairs, setting up your shop and anything else you might need to know!

A good starting point is to check HMRC for tax registration and record-keeping requirements. Most craft fairs require public and product liability insurance, so arrange that before selling. Start small at local fairs or online to test demand, keep clear records of costs and sales, and gradually expand. The forum also has useful threads on insurance, fairs, and shop setup that can guide you step by step.
