I have been editing out distracting bits of background from this and was wondering if any one could tell.
If you could have a close look and let me know I’d appreciate it. Also is it now too bland for a main photo?

Try fotofuze.com - this is the (very quick!) result I got with a background of 80 and a shadow softness of 2:
It’s a free resource.
If you have Photoshop, you can do this even quicker by using the content aware transform. This will transform the overall image to a different aspect ratio but it protects the subject. No blending or cloning required and it will work very well if your subject stands out from a plain background. It can be done in a few seconds.
