But you might wish to rank for something competitive like “unique gift”, in which case, switching to the “unique kitchenwares” category would give you a huge boost!
Are the any particular sub-categories you think would be useful for your products that we don’t already have @LooneySpoons @CrochetandI because we can see if we can add them.
Good point @theslothscavern. The ‘everything else’ subcategory in Cards is a really old one from way back. It’s tricky to change existing sub-categories because it can break links but we could add a new sub-categories to help people who currently don’t have the right section. Looking at it, there seems to be a need for ‘Graduation Cards’, ‘Thinking of You Cards’ ‘Personalised’ and ‘Cards for Grandparents’. Do any other ones spring to mind and I’ll see if we can add them? We could also potentially rename the ‘everything else’ category but keep the link the same. I need to check that with Doug.
Very good point, many greetings cards can be used for lots of different occasions. A subcategory for maybe “all occasions or any occasion cards” would be a better search term perhaps
Perhaps rename ‘everthing else’ under the cards subcategory to … all occasion cards or any occasion cards
I’ve just been having a look, most of my pregnancy announcements I have used this one which is not really relevant.
Yes they are letterbox or gift but it would be great if there was an announcement section that could them split into different reasons which would give better visibility. I do have gift box options to list but I’ve not rushed as the ones I currently have listed don’t really get seen.
Picture of what product I’m talking about
Thank you Camilla, I’ll give it some serious thought! ‘Tablewares’ or ‘Cutlery’ perhaps (strictly speaking spoons are Flatware but nobody in the UK seems to know this except me so it’s pretty useless as a search term). There is a subcategory for Teapots and one for Cosies and I’d really love to see ‘Teaspoons’ in there too (the teaspoon is the most popular spoon size) although perhaps that’s drilling down too far. ‘Spoons’ would be good though?
@LooneySpoons Yes, when thinking of potential categories it’s good to check if there are at least a page of items that would fit. We don’t want a massive list of categories that are so specific there are only a few items each or it could be really overwhelming for buyers, and take a lot more clicking to find what they’re looking for if going through categories. For examples teaspoons might be most popular, but if someone had/was looking for a soup spoon, they wouldn’t use that and would expect another specific category to fit that. Being more general helps as it would cover tea, soup, dessert, even big wooden mixing spoons, so it’s useful to more sellers and buyers can quickly find what they’re looking for. However if you also want a better category for your forks, you might prefer ‘cutlery’ (or ‘spoons, knives & forks’) as we won’t have enough fork listings to have a specific category for just those.
It’s just trying to find the balance of clear categories that cover everything sold, but without being so specific they’ve just got a few things or only one seller’s items.
@SeaPinkCards We already have ‘blank’ for cards which can be used for any occasion (maybe ‘blank greetings cards’ would be a clearer description). ‘Everything else’ is more the specific cards that aren’t covered by the current categories, like Halloween or passing a driving test. What would be a better title for those?
How about ‘other occasions’?
Yes, thanks Kim, see what you mean regarding the blank subcategory. Often have wondered does ‘blank’ refer to blank inside for writing a message or greeting. Or does it mean blank, as in no text or sentiment anywhere on the card, just an image on the front. For example, I’ve a couple of cards with, Just for You and one with, Oceans of Happiness on the front, but they’re blank inside. I’ve listed them under blank, as I didn’t think the ‘everything else’ search term was one that buyers would use. Regarding cards for driving test congrats, I would categorise that under ‘congratulations’ subcategory. I’ve a few Halloween cards that also have a small sentiment on the front and I’ve put them under blank when I listed them. Trying to guess what buyers will search under is so difficult. As Camilla noted, thinking of you, would be a good subcategory to add. As @HelenCliffordArt has suggested, other occasions, rather than everything else.
“other occasions”, “many occasions” or “various occasions” would be more suitable and it would match the search keywords better.
I personally like the “everything else” if I am about to go clicking through the categories, BUT, for the search results, and since it plays such a big role to the “point system” it would need to reflect what people search for and not what they click on. Meaning with this, that if you see it as a term, yes you know what you will find there and you will click. But when you search on whatever search engine and even Folksy, you will not. I would personally go for something like “cards for various occasions” alternating the word “various” with the word “many”. In my opinion, the word occasions should be mentioned in the title.
I tend to share mine between the blank & everything else category, none of them ever appeared in my stats as a “search term” though, and I find the “blank” term doesn’t always seem right, as although my card might be blank inside, there are sentiments on the front (just for you, for you, just to say, thinking of you, with love, etc.) I wouldn’t of course expect a category for each one of them, this would be mad
Caught up with this webinar yesterday and realised I wasn’t featuring very highly in a search I definitely should have been (vintage fabric) - made some changes to the title, description and tags and this morning I have a couple of things on the first page of search results. Thank you @folksycontent for taking the time to explain all this, it was really useful
I thought it was very good! I have taken notes and already started to implement it. It will take some time though, I have 70+ listings. Is it advisable to change titles though, does this create broken links?
Not to my personal experience, never seen a broken link because of that and I change my titles quite often for some items. Pinterest and Facebook are always updated, cannot say about Instagram, X & Threads though, as I don’t use them. Hope it helps x
ETA that every time I add the link manually, I only copy up to the listing number and not the whole thing, so I don’t know if that matters as well.
It was extremely useful, thank you, a lot of detailed information to understand how it works. But I had to watch the recording as the live session was on a Wednesday midday yet again. Is it at all possible that these sessions might be organised on different days and times, it would be so good to be be able to join live sometime. I’ve noticed the next follow up workshop is also midday Wednesday, so again I won’t be able to join. Nat
@malloryjournals No, changing the title doesn’t affect links you’ve previously posted at all, it’s the number that’s important for getting to the right page.
For example, if I alter what’s written after the number on a Folksy link it’ll still get to your item, even though it’s htt ps://folksy.com/items/8328631-I-made-up-this-title
Just watched a recording of it, found it very informative.
I have had a go at editing a few listings, starting with the titles, then Tags, recording them, I found that if I write them in 'Notebook ’ I can play around with the order, once I’m satisfied with the order , I copy & paste them into the tag section.
I had a look at the categories, and ‘everything else’ seem redundant, in thee greeting card , I think 'other occasions ’ would work, as 'everything else ’ is is also in most of the other categories (I’ve looked at)
Can I make a request for ‘Friendship’ subcategory as a few of my cards can be used for, wellbeing, pick me up, motivation, themes, for someone you know who is a feeling a bit low.
Yes I found it very useful - and of course the tips and ideas on this workshop will also work quite well for SEO in Google Search and other areas too!
@folksycontent Thank you for putting together a really useful blog post on how the search works. It’s good that Basic Sellers can share in the guidance too! I’m off to rearrange the order of my tag words as I haven’t done that yet…
@folksycontent Really useful information contained in the webinar, thanks for that. Could I request a ‘thinking of you’ subcategory for greetings cards. I think it would be really useful, specially when someone wants to send a ‘paper-hug’
Could we have a drop down menu under our own Greeting card collection so we can add our own titles and means not having a pile of icons on the front page
