3D Printing. Does it count as Handmade Arts,

I am seeing more and more things for sale as handmade arts, crafts which are 3D printed… something, a ‘manufacturing or crafting’ technique, which was not available when the ‘rules’ for what is handmade were determined here.
I am not in any way criticising and if I had a 3D printer I am sure I would be printing all sorts of things  but I don’t know the technology involved and therefore wonder what others think ?

As one of those people - a 3D printer is not mass production. You have to create and edit the design according to the type of printer you have and the materials you are using, there’s a lot of trial and error in order to get a design right. My yarn bowls can take up to a day to print and there’s always an element of hand finishing (sanding or applying a coating).

I agree, 3D printing is fine, provided of course the design is your own. I’ve not done it, but I think as Jennifer says, the designing is a skill!

(I’m more bothered by ‘personalised printing’ services… but that’s a different post…)

I think as long as you know how it’s made it’s fine and you can make a decision accordingly. As @JenStarKnits said, there is a different type of creativity in 3D printing. Same with laster cutters.

Thanks for that. I really have no idea how they work so good to know.
Maybe people who make 3D things can use this topic as a place to show them off ?

@helencliffordart Yes I agree with both your comments and especially your second
