Advertising Folksy in magazines and maybe tv?

I just felt like I should make it clear that we do already do a lot of marketing and regularly talk to journalists, and Folksy has been featured in lots of magazines. We have also been trialling Google adverts and we’ll let you know more about how this has been working when we have the data.

TV advertising needs an enormous budget (hundreds of thousands of pounds) - so even with, for example, £1 from every seller we would still be way off.

However I do love the idea of collective action and we have been talking about possibly introducing an extra option (in addition to the free and Plus accounts) which could maybe include Facebook advertising for your products and shop, as well as other extras.

Could that work? What would you want with that option?

Hi Camilla -

Yes - have seen Folksy and Folksy makers in some top magazines.

I think it may be a good idea to add new ‘tiers’ / types of accounts. People may be willing to pay for extras.

I sort of like that idea @folksycontent but I do worry that you would be somehow creating an elite set of folksy sellers. Don’t know whether that’s right or wrong.

I do think however that as a collective , folsky sellers should be able to do something to help advertise folksy. Something that doesn’t take up any time or techy understanding , ie we don’t have to spend time at the PC doing yet more promoting. Folksy sending out free stickers / tote bags out to all sellers ?(or maybe just the ones that get to 100 sales ???) was an idea I had.

Facebook works like a micky mouse rolex for me,a reach of 2,that two would have to be the Goddess and God of handmade and they would have to love my work.

I’m not keen on new tiers of accounts.

I like the idea of collective action, but feel it needs to be all inclusive to be cohesive, and not an opt out or opt in account.
I also wouldn’t be interested in paying extra for Facebook advertising - goodness, I’m sounding really negative!

Yes, on one of her crafting programmes…we need her to mention Folksy as well…

Thank you for your input Camilla…I am sure that some of us would be happy to pay a little extra for personal style advertising…as long as it wasn’t too expensive…and as long as there was a yearly/monthly option…so maybe we could try it and if it worked pay again at the next option point.
(if that makes sense…lol)…
I know that on facebook (am I allowed to mention that?) you can pay to BOOST your visibility…so maybe something like that would be worth trying…??

I would be happy to pay some kind of collective sub towards advertising of Folksy as a whole. I’m not sure about specialist publications but maybe somewhere that encompasses the ideology of the British craftplace?

I was thinking perhpas we could all make ‘#folksy friday’ into more of an event on twitter/fb/ig - ? @folksycontent

Folksy sellers as a whole could concentrate their tweets, posts, discounts, #ff, promotions, adding new items in stock all on that day.

If I did pay for facebook I would want it pointed at the folksy landing page, thereafter visitors would enter a search or go to catagories and we all took our chances, not pointed at my shop,as feminine touch pointed out that could create an elite tier system and I am not here to gain advantage over other sellers.

Yes, yes, something like this is what I meant. Just a bit of a Folksy campaign.

That’s a really nice idea, Sally. FolksyFriday used to be really popular, and we used to see loads of blog posts featuring Folksy sellers published on Fridays as part of it. We tried resurrecting it about a year ago, but we didn’t get very much interest.

Maybe we could try again, and encourage Folksy sellers to share their favourite Folksy items every Friday, share their behind the scenes pics, promotions and their own new listings across blogs and social media using the #folksyfriday tag? We could then share those and push them at our end?

I just thought if we had the #folksyfriday tag in everything it may ‘trend’ (if that is the right word)

if we go down the “pay a £1 towards something” avenue, it may get very complicated as everybody would have to agree what it is to be used for (unless it taken automically from accounts of course)

sadly I don’t do twitter etc…I only do pinterest and facebook…so that would mean that I couldn’t take part.

Unfortunately I cannot take part in Folksy Friday as I am carer for my sick husband…that would be such a pity…there must be other people who are not available to take part on a specified day and time and I also cannot do twitter…so I would be ruled out…

You can do hashtags on there too Brenda, doesn’t have to be just Twitter.

hi brenda - i was meaning on all social media so you could do it on facebook too with the #folksyfriday tag

also - you can schedule posts on facebook / twitter so people wouldn’t necessarily have to do it on that day.

Brenda my facebook page automatically tweets my posts. So all (!) you would have to do is get someone (one of your children?) to set up twitter for you and link your fb PAGE to your twitter account. Include the hashtag #ff on your Friday facebook post and the job is done

My son set me up a twitter page Stephie but hubby is very against twitter so I don’t use it and have now forgotten the password…he would be cross if I used it…he doesn’t even like facebook but I get away with that one…Sally…remember I am an oldie…I am not quite sure what you mean byt folksy friday tag,as for scheduling posts on facebook…I wouldn’t have a clue where to start I am afraid and because I am hubby’s carer…every time I start something he needs my assistance…so I can never guarantee timing. I am only on here now because he has gone to bed but I also need to go and help him now…sigh…
