Any tips on starting a blog?

I also have been toying with the idea and read the thread with interest. I will have a look at it too. The problem is I don’t think I have much to write about, there are only so many ways you can say I worked in the workshop today.

I used to write long posts, but I now keep them short just a brief description on what I have created. Some people I know do not actually read the posts, they just look at your creation and then leave you a comment.
Hope this helps everyone. But it is a good way to promote your creations and get stats and views of your shop.

just popped over to your blog and it is fab!! I love the way you have showed beautiful creations from Folksy, I now follow your blog, keep up the great work. I must take time to do Folksy finds aswell to help promote sellers.

Ooh…thank you for the compliment Gracie

Must admit we do enjoy the whole process behind blogging.
It’s a shared activity, (as everything is here). I write it and research it and Gary takes all the photos.
The Folksy finds is a great excuse to find lots of lovely stuff, (to add to our Christmas list!)

I looked at this morning and that’s what made me think about adding Gadgets down the side but I still have a bit to do.

I have thought about having a Blog ; the idea really appeals to me as it is a place where you can very much mix your interests and is less disjointed than Facebook, where I tend to focus most of my efforts. As always though the dilemma comes with splitting time between sewing/designing/packing kits/posting/networking/etc etc etc!..

My thoughts exactly. A good blog would be great to have. But I’m also sceptical about putting more pressure on my hands than it’s necessary.

I like blogging but I’m a bit haphazard with it. I’m trying to be a bit more regular now though. hinking what to write can be hard so mine is a fairly random mix!

I have used wordpress but changed to blogger as I found it so much simpler - I really like the android app for blogger which means I can blog straight from my phone. It’s fairly basic in what you can do but at least I can work on the run!

My blog’s at www.moonriverjewellery.blogspot.co.uk

I love a blog with a random feel to it!
Great ‘sheep’ blog too, right up our alley so off to follow you.

Thanks! I’ve just been reading yours  I like reading about your garden - mine’s gone wild, I’m going to take some photos today and blog about that next week.

I have a blog on Blogger. It’s suits my needs and easy to use. I have heard great things about Wordpress.

I have reviewed the book Blogging for Creatives on my blog, queue the plug! http://fizzijaynemakes.blogspot.co.uk/2014/02/book-review-1-blogging-for-creatives.html, you might find useful as it’s full of advice and hints and tips.

I would also recommend networking, I co-host a Twitter chat, #craftblogclub, every Tuesday night from 7pm (GMT). It has been a great place to meet other crafters/bloggers and share tips.

Blogging is a great way to build a community of like minded people. I enjoy writing my blog but be warned it can take over as it is a lot of work but fun as long as you write about what you are passionate about.

I hope this helps, good luck with it

It was very nice to read through all the replies, there is always something to learn. I use blogspot and it is very easy to use, but Wordpress is easy too. Then you can promote it through social media, groups, etc. Apart from what you do, try to also give others advice and tips so you will have people to come back for more. It could be a bit daunting in the beginning, but if you post regularly, it will pick up :).

Here is my blog that certainly needs more updating :

I use Wordpress (the free one, there is a paid for version too). I have been doing it for a long time now (before Wordpress I was on Blogger), and I have found it so valuable for me… I do put a little bit of my family life in there, and so I can see the history of what I have been up to for the last 7-8 years… I can also see the changes that have happened as I have tried to forge a path as a creative person! So it can be a really valuable thing if you stick to it, I recommend it! This is me: veryberryhandmade.co.uk

Top tips: Be part of a blogging community - go and leave comments on other people’s blogs and they will come and leave comments on yours (hopefully!).
Ask questions that people will want to answer in their comments.
Provide great content - share creative tips, tutorials, how to’s, patterns etc., make it so that people will want to come back regularly.
Run events - I have run giveaways and swaps through my blog which have really built an audience (but make sure that you have a few people reading regularly before you do that - it can be a bit depressing if you get absolutely no response!).
Get involved in other craft events run by other bloggers - I have found getting involved in sewing and crochet swaps the absolute best way to build up a crowd of friends who all leave kind comments on other peoples’ blogs!
If you post photos on Flickr, Instagram or FB, then always put the link to your blog. Take great pics! Nothing gets people looking at your blog more than awesome photos of gorgeously made stuff…

I’ve been blogging for a couple of years, mainly about non-work related sewing, but I am starting to introduce some other creative things I do and free tutorials. I use wordpress and am very happy with it. I use a button to link to my shop, but like the look o the new widget which shows a selection of your items. I think the best way to gain followers is to follow others and comment, and to take part in community activities. Giveaways are good too. Something I didn’t do at the beginning an wish I had is to reply on my blog to comments. It’s a really nice way to engage with people. Good luck! Dottiedoodle.wordpress.com

I’ve just started a Blog and did loads of searching for good hosts and came up with Weebly.com which is bliss to use…I think I must be super-thick as I tried WordPress and
was so frustrated with it, I deleted the account!!

I have a weebly website and started a blog on there but haven’t done much with that either. Here’s my link.
