I’m sure this topic has been covered before but can anyone point me in the direction of cheap craft fair insurance. It is not for myself - I am covered by my membership to a professional body but my daughter, who wants to try doing a craft fair to sell some of her artwork and is looking for cover. She only needs something basic as this is not her livelihood and she will probably only do a few fairs on an ad hoc basis. Is it possible to buy insurance by the day?
There is this thread from 2019: Craft fair insurance for Jewellery
also this one about PLI from around a year ago: https://talk.folksy.com/t/public-liability-insurance-quote/27210
I don’t know whether it’s possible to buy insurance by the day but you could contact some of the companies that are recommended in those threads and see what they can offer. I hope your daughter finds what she needs and has a successful time at her fairs!
ETA did a quick google for ‘short term public and product liability insurance UK’ and the first thing that came up was this One Off Event Insurance - Short Term Event Insurance | Protectivity
I have NO idea whether they’re any good but there must be lots of other companies offering one-off event insurance so that might be a productive line of enquiry
This is something I was about to look into before starting craft fairs in Nov, so I’ll be interested to see the replies. I didn’t know you could get coverage by being a member of a ‘professional body’ though. That might be worth thinking about (I’m just about to head off for a couple of days, so I’ll be getting into it properly when I get back!).
@TheHermitsBothy for anyone making jewellery I recommend looking into Guild of Jewellery Designers - their gold plus account includes PPL insurance as well as discounts with companies like cooksongold (I cover most of the membership cost with the savings on bullion). Insurance covers craft markets as well as online selling including selling to USA.
I’ve just been looking at a-n to see if they’d work for me for an upcoming craft fair and I don’t believe they will - I think they are designed primarily for artists in the narrow meaning of the word. Unfortunately you won’t know if the Insurance you get in the Membership is effective for you until you have a claim and if you don’t meet the criteria they list, they won’t provide cover.
I may well be wrong and you can be covered, but I suggest that you double check with them to be sure. I worked in Insurance for over 30 years and having read the policy provided by Hiscox, I don’t think it’d work for me or for you, looking at what you make.
I know this is an old thread, but I just wondered if you had any success finding anywhere that did a cheap one-off insurance, just to cover doing one fair? Roz @OrchardFelts
It is such a shame not to be able to do an odd sale because the cost of insurance would be more than any likely profit. There is a sale coming up at our tennis club that I would love to do, or more likely the one they do at Christmas. They advise, but do not insist on Insurance. It would be likely to be the only fair I would do.
