Hello everyone. I am thinking of upgrading my phone and wondering what people’s opinion is of i-phone versions for taking product photos. At the moment my husband takes my Folksy photos as he is a photographer but he’s starting to get busy now with actual paying clients (happy dance!). I’d like to start doing more of my own but I think my current 6s is possibly not up to doing a good job of photography - thinking maybe of going to a 12? Do people find a good phone camera is enough or does anyone use supplementary equipment? Thanks for reading.
I have a 12 and love it. Also use a light tent with led’s which are adjustable to get the colours right.
I use my tablet, it gives a big clear picture of my work, my phone is useless and my camera has such a small screen it’s hard to see if its in focus. I do everything on my tablet and never use my computer anymore, it can do everything I did on my computer. I’ve used a tablet for several years now.
Like Sue @SueTrevor, I do most things on my Samsung tablet including taking photos.
Must admit my old phone was not good as the screen so small but the 12 is a good size.
I take my photos on my samsung phone but then I photoshop them afterward. It’s nice and quick this way.
I use an IPhone 12 mini, it’s does take great photos and it’s east to edit in the phone, the one thing I struggle with is getting the light right I get a choice of full on south facing sun or full on north facing shade, so please don’t judge my product shots on the wonderful phone I use
@SueTrevor That sounds an interesting thought. I currently use a digital camera, a PC, and have a non-smart mobile phone. If I bought a tablet would that cover everything I wanted to do ie take pics, make phone calls and texts, use word processing etc…? I’m a bit out of touch with tech having been a PC-only person for centuries, and was thinking of buying a laptop as a back up to the PC, but wondered if a tablet would cover all bases.
Take a look at tablets in detail, you basically get what you pay for. If possible test them out and check what the photos look like. My bff’s husband is a wildlife photographer he use all the kit and kabooble but also his iPhone as quick to point and shoot in some circumstances. He currently uses a 14 but does upgrade every year. I had a 4s and there is a fart difference to the 12. Also have an iPad but find the photos better with the 12. My iPad is a bit older though and these things improve all the time. My Panasonic Leica lens camera was good but colours never accurate.
No, unfortunately it doesn’t make phone calls, do texts or WhatsApp. So I still need my phone. You can get phablets that do everything, but there quite small. But does everything else, word processing, printing etc. Is there anyone you know who might use a tablet? Who could tell you more. I won’t go back to a lap top or computer. I do have a son that occasionally helps me out if I’m struggling but this is infrequent. I bought a cheap phone on a cheap tariff, my phone does talk to my tablet though which is useful for the calendar.
@SueTrevor @Caroleecrafts Thanks so much to you both for your explanations and advice. I’ll look into everything further, and will see what comes up in the January Sales!
John Lewis is where I bought my last two as they have good customer service should anything go wrong.
Hello
You won’t go crazy with photos here because the photo size is limited to 5 mgpx. I’m taking an old Galaxy 5 and somehow I manage
I agree with Sue we get all our electrical from them as such good guarantees, usually twice the length of anyone else. Bought most of our Macs from them.
Thanks ever so much for all your replies everyone, they are really helpful. I never would have thought of using a tablet as I don’t have one - interesting idea though. I’m thinking of getting a mini version of the 12 as I have really small hands so interested to hear that PaintedhorseArt uses a mini. Its nice to have sparked off a general discussion about tablets. Thanks again everyone, will be mulling it over. Hilary.
I’ve been using my iPhone SE 2020 now with a pop-up light box (especially in the winter).
I also edit afterwards with Serif’s affinity photo (exactly like photoshop without the huge monthly price!) if I need to, usually lighten and brighten and resize them to 300 dpi and make my photos about 18cm square (so they are under Folksy’s 5mb limit!)
I had an iPhone 6 which I won in a competition, then bought this phone on Music magpie, it’s a reconditioned phone but was basically brand new, for a fraction of the cost (and helps the environment too).
Hope this helps!!
Cheers, Amanda
