Folksy Summer Exhibition 2024 - have you applied?

My son is going to give me a lesson on photography tomorrow so I’m hoping once I grasp using the camera instead of my tablet and learn how to get them onto google photos and my tablet to edit I might just get my pieces sent ot Folksy.,

A quick question…2 of my pieces will be going into my shop for sale, would you hold onto them until nearer the exhibition or list them now @kimfolksy, I know we don’t have to enter pieces that are for sale but as they are new I just wondered what others thoughts were on it.

Hello I have a couple of questions

First - does the painting/artwork have to be photographed hung on plain white background? Is it just a close up of the full canvas or can it be on a mockup background.

I also have a second piece that I have actually sold but the only photos I have are of it in the garden as it is not a conventional canvas painting

The other thing is I am having trouble naming my files as neither my phone or iPad allow me to change a file name. Any help with this would be appreciated…thank you

Angela

What phone do you have? I managed to change mine on my Samsung phone.

Hi Angela @TheHedgerowArtist, I managed to rename my files but when i uploaded them to the entry form they still showed as img6025 etc even though when I clicked on that number it brought my name and entry numbers up, I emailed Folksy admin and they kindly changed them for me.

You don’t have to have plain white backgrounds for your photos, use whatever works for your piece, I used cream for mine as it looked better than white with my bears.last year Folksy swapped my entry for the fringe and chose another bear and they picked one I had photographed in the garden.

I would like to apply but I don’t think my photography is good enough and at the moment I don’t think I could face rejection by a selection process due to suffering from depression at the moment. If I don’t apply I wouldn’t feel my work is not good enough!

Thank you Debby that is really helpful.

Good luck everyone

Think you might have posted that in the wrong thread @Knittingtopia , feels like it should be in the daily listers thread or similar.

Just submitted, once I’d got past that captcha nonsense - what’s a Crosswalk? We’re in the UK here…

Just have to wait and see now :slightly_smiling_face:

As I said I have entered, however I would need a miracle to win anything. Having said that I thought even though I won’t win I hope it will improved exposure (not of my body though)

I’ve finally found the courage to enter this year after ‘Imposter Syndrome’ got the better of me last year, although I’m pretty sure I won’t be included in the main exhibition, like Sue @MinpinTowers has said, some exposure from maybe the fringe may happen.
I’ve a question though, going through the application form, I can see where to upload the photos but there isn’t anywhere to enter a description/caption or explanation. Am I missing something or is it just the photo that’s needed? I thought with not having to have an item actually for sale then there would be somewhere to say why it means something or why it’s special to me.
Probs me just overthinking!

If I remember right there was only room for a title

@DemelzaDesigns I think your photography is good, especially your knits look beautifully presented. You know yourself best. I also have a “not good enough” monster in residence, and sometimes you have to know when to step back and not feed it. It’s very individual, and I think we creatives are generally more sensitive to the world around us, and that goes in to our work too. We identify part of ourselves with it due to the passion we put in, so it’s natural to want to protect that. I hope you’re feeling better soon x

@thestitchyroom unfortunately there isn’t anywhere to include a description, just a title, I would have liked to include details of what I had done but I can see how it would be a lot of extra work for Folksy having to read everyones descriptions.

@DemelzaDesigns I think your photos are great, really clear and your work is beautiful, but I do also understand how you feel. I spent weeks making my items and was pleased with the results but then spent 3 days on photography and hundreds of images later that wern’t the standard needed, It was stressful and by the end of the second day I was really fed up and questionning whether to bother but I’m really pleased I gave it another go. I think it would be a shame if you didn’t enter especially as your photos are already very good, hope you soon feel back on top of things again xx

I had a quick look at your shop, and on the very first page this beautiful dress stood out - even if you decide not to apply, and that has to be your choice, I certainly think it is a good enough photograph to be proudly displayed anywhere x

That’s so kind of you to say that to me. I am physically disabled and I have to try to do my photography sitting down! When I stand for more than ten minutes my pain is unbearable. I have an incomplete spinal cord injury plus spinal mylopathy.
