Hi everyone, I am in the process of setting up my new shop (trying to escape Etsy but that’s another story) and getting my head round where things go on Folksy. It’s all pretty confusing at the moment, similar but very different! Any advice, tips or golden rules are very welcome!
Welcome, I’ve only been here a few days but welcome. Listing a variety of items, patience and joining in the forums are the golden nuggets ive picked up so far (I’m still learning). Hope this helps, good luck!
Welcome to Folksy Mick and Sarah.
I have been here for years now and love it. You have to work at the social media side but once all set up, linking accounts etc a doddle.
Joining in the forum challenge helps the stipulation is that you click on the link of the other posters and heart that item on their shop page. We then do the same for you. Helps keep your listings further up the front pages.
Hi,
Folksy is a lovely place to be! Have you transferred your listings from Etsy? If you email support at Folksy they can help to save trying to add each one! I found this really easy when I moved over.
Good Luck!
Cheers Lou
Thank you all for the warm welcome! Already it seems so much friendlier than the forums at Etsy…
@WhimsicalBells thanks for the suggestion, I’m not sure that some of my listings on Etsy would be acceptable here so I’ll play safe and move/copy one at a time manually to avoid accidentally moving a vintage listing. I know that ‘plain’ vintage is not allowed here and accept that, but what about ‘hand’ refurbished vintage lamps with new electrical parts, wiring and bulbs?
I think I’ve answered that question myself by looking at the knowledge base here more closely, it looks like a no. No problem, I’ll just list my upcycled creations here.
Hi and welcome - I made the switch from Etsy and currently run both Etsy and Folksy sites but my heart is firmly with Folksy. You will soon pick up Folksy ‘differences’ but the two main ones are that you have to drive a lot of your sales from your own social media accounts (not my strong point) and that Folksy is a much friendlier and helpful environment, responsive to sellers needs rather than impersonal and overcrowded like Etsy. Folksy is definitely about small businesses making genuinely handmade items rather than high turnover businesses peddling ‘dubious tat’ - for ‘creatives’ that has to be a good thing. Folksy is a much smaller company than Etsy and for many Etsy return more sales but I think Folksy might be a better fit for certain business’s and a good alternative to Etsy. I find you learn more and have more fun on Folksy and the community is great. I’m looking forward to seeing your ‘creations’ and good luck.
Hallo there @SteampunkCreativeEngineering Welcome to Folksy. I hope you enjoy setting up your shop and selling - I have been here for a couple of years, and have found everyone extremely helpful and supportive, both sellers themselves and the Folksy team. I don’t sell online other than through Folksy, and never have, but I do also sell through a small number of art galleries. Good luck!
Welcome @SteampunkCreativeEngineering ! You will find the Folksy community very helpful and friendly. Any problems - just ask! You will always receive useful help, advice and support when you need it here. Good luck with your new shop.
Hello and greetings
Etsy is a big marketplace with Chinese goods produced by the hundreds so you can get lost in the crowd without a trace.
Support is also non-existent.
Here it is just the opposite
You just have to be patient and wait out the hard times.
Thank you all, your welcomes and advice are all much appreciated!
@Fififoxi yes, I intend to run shops on both sites, at least for the time being. Etsy is typical corporate America nowadays and pursuit of the dollar is paramount to them, as I’m sure both you and @Jerzy are aware, so support will remain unattainable, software bots will keep indiscriminately deactivating for the wrong context of a word, the search will find everything - except what you’re looking for, the reseller issue won’t be changing any time soon and the programmers will keep fixing what isn’t broken until it is, well and truly…
Me? Disillusioned? Nah, just pragmatic…
I’m hoping to get to grips with my first listing on Folksy very soon now, my shop is almost ready, hoping to get that done this evening!
I just managed to list my first item on Folksy; a lamp made from used chainsaw engine parts. Next one tomorrow if all goes well.
