Handmade at Amazon - coming soon?

I read that bit too and was a little bit concerned about copying @EileensCraftStudio

I was told Instagram has something similar or along those lines too in regards to artists/crafters’ photos. Everyone has rights to everything nowadays!

Isn’t it to allow them to redistribute for marketing purposes?

No it’s not just to use your photo’s to advertise Amazon.

Amazon have a history of seeing what sells then copying and then closing down the original sellers shop.

Just had hubby read this properly for me before I go ahead and register my things. He seems to think its like what you said they do and that I should hold off from selling on there. I’m going to take his advice and not do it because thats the last thing I need to do, Shoot myself in the foot.

I can’t believe there are two active threads here discussing potential selling on ā€˜ā€˜Handmade on Amazon’’

If there were two active threads talking about selling on Etsy or NOTHS there’d have been uproar :sunny:

Well, I have completed my registration this afternoon. It wasn’t as difficult as I had feared, and went quite smoothly.I decided to leave the setting up the shop and adding items bit until tomorrow (quit while you’re ahead!)

Amazon are not a manufacturer. They’re a logistics and distribution business so they don’t have a manufacturing arm that makes and copies other people’s work.

@StephanieGuy is correct. They reserve the right to use any of your advertising materials (photos and wording etc) in their marketing as the see fit.

I have the same in my day job. Speakers at our events sign a form that states we can use the footage from our filming of them in any way we wish to i.e for marketing purposes, uploading to our TV broadcast service etc etc. We do not own the content of their presentation though so we cannot distribute it as our own. Just the video footage. If that makes sense?

I wouldn’t let it put you off if you’re considering selling through them… It’s just not for me at this stage.

They do manufacturer in that they pay companies to make items for them via contract think about the Kindle that belongs to Amazon. Amazon does not have it’s own factories it out sources it’s manufacturing.

It’s not just about using your photo’s to advertise Amazon.

Do you think companies like Tesco have their own factories making their own brand they sell in their retails supermarkets? They go to established companies and contract that manufacture to make this brand branded Tesco jam or pie etc etc.

This is what Amazon do then they have those items shipped to their own warehouses where they are stored until you buy one. It’s the nature of retail.

To be honest @EileensCraftStudio that’s exactly how my hubby read section 4. I started to register on Amazon yesterday purely to list items that I don’t make anymore and wasn’t bothered if they were copied, but I hit a stumbling block and don’t think I can sell on there. It’s all due to us having a Vacation Villa in the USA and it’s in joint names so it might cause a bit of a problem when it comes to submitting the tax for the Villa, which we have to have an accountant over there for.
I’m waiting on a reply from Amazon as the person on the chat line couldn’t help me with it. I’m beginning to think it’s not worth the hassle.

I’m also reading in other threads / forums concerns about those terms. Things like…it’s not only about your photos, they retain your material even after you close your account…I don’t know…best to check and doublecheck. Don’t rush yourselves because the busy holiday season is coming up. Very tricky timing!

Handmade at Amazon have actually lost my business. I don’t rate it at all, I still have had no email back from them after my recent question to them about my concern about us paying US taxes. If they can’t be bothered to let me know then I can’t be bothered to carry on filling in the registration form. I’m doing quite well on Facebook so I’ll continue with that.

They are very bad at answering emails that relate to anything legal.

The mods in their forums often give out incorrect information as well. When you do get through to their legal guys they avoid your questions and give out useless canned avoidance replies.

Well I’ll be avoiding them like the plague. I don’t think it’ll work for me any way unless they bring out the UK version. I’ve read some where that it’s only aimed on the USA at the mo and the UK version could follow. So that will be easier seen as I’m already registered here for tax.

I seem to have managed to register, set up shop and list items without too many problems. I also found them to be very quick to reply to my email with exactly the information I’d requested. We’ll see what happens when they go live, but at the moment I’m relatively happy with them.

I got so far with my registration form and when it came to doing the tax side of it, it asked all sorts of weird questions like, how long do you spend in the U.S. In one year. I couldn’t see what that had to do with me selling on their site.

They are asking you questions to establish whether you are a US resident, or whether you spend enough time in the US to be liable for tax there. They are being responsible, and making sure that if you are liable for US taxes, you have registered to pay them. That’s all.

When I stated how many days a year we do spend their which is a fair few, it then more questions which I didn’t know the answer to and it wouldn’t let me go any further. So that’s when I started a chat with someone at Amazon and in the end she didn’t even have the answer. The chat ended by her saying she would get someone to email me within 72 hours. Well almost 10 days now and I’m still waiting.
So that’s why I’m not carrying on with my filling shop.
I also got an email yesterday to start filling my shop but how can I when I haven’t even registered properly.
I am registered in the U.S. In joint names with my hubby for our villa and I don’t want it to interfere with the taxes with that, so it’s best I don’t bother.

I wonder what their rules and enforcement about ā€œhandmadeā€ will be. Etsy is full of resellers and copycats now.
