Does anyone have any experience of printed knitting patterns sent by post versus those sent by email on Folksy? I sell over on the ‘dark side’ where most customers prefer instant digital downloads but I do occasionally get asked for a printed copy. Do Folksy customers mind that any PDF orders here can only be sent manually by email or is it best to list as printed copies for posting?
How about setting up a variation so that people can pick from either emailed PDF or snail mailed paper copy ? (You’d need to put the cost of postage against the snail mail variation)
As a knitter I prefer a pdf that I can reprint as often as I need as I often make notes on the print out and it can get a bit tatty. I know of others prefer a print out as they don’t have a printer to do it themselves.
Thank you for your advice Sasha ![]()
I used to sell a few knitting patterns on E*** but always as an instant download. I always like an instant download PDF then I am able to print it out as often as needed.
I think it would be a great idea to offer printed and PDF, obviously you would want to ask for printing and postage costs.
I prefer the original pattern sent in the post. I have some that are about 20 pages long and have stopped buying them now as it’s a messing about trying to print them.
I have in the past bought some from the other side that were vintage patterns sent through the post, great, but then annoyed to find they were b & w photocopies of the original pattern, I also think digital patterns should be cheaper than the originals as it’s an added cost printing them at home. It’s different if they are original designs by the seller but not when they are vintage mass produced patterns from sirdar for example.
I’m pretty sure its not legal or certainly not ethical to sell other companies patterns like that. I know that Folksy don’t offer an instant digital download service but in reference to ‘the other site’ you have to remember that taxes are applied to digital downloads so for instance if I sell one of my own patterns for £3.50 they show to UK buyers as £4.20 due to the tax which obviously doesn’t go to the seller.
