Pinterest Using Pins to Train AI & Opt-Out Option

Hello! An arty colleague just alerted me to Pinterest now requiring you to opt-out of allowing ‘Pinterest Canvas’, the Pinterest generative-AI system, using your pins to train itself (the page auto-selects you to allow it, by the looks of things). To update your settings you just need to go to Settings > Privacy and unclick the gen-AI option.

I know some of this community feel the same way about generative-AI and the use of online work as training for systems without the image owner’s knowledge as I do (distinctly peeved about it) so I thought I’d share here!

Thank you so much for posting that. I feel very strongly about the use of AI and its impact on all creative industries and very much object to anything of mine being used to train AI bots. I went to Pinterest following your instructions, and yes, my box was pre-ticked to allow AI to do what it wanted. It is now unchecked!

You’re welcome! I loathe gen-AI in my bones - I’m a professional author and I’ve been sharing work online since about 2009, and I learnt in 2023 that my blog posts, website updates, book snippets and short stories were all merrily used to train ChatGPT and the others without me having so much as an inkling. If you’re going to use work for training, you should gain informed consent (and ideally compensate creators). But noooo. (Don’t even get me started on the environmental impact of the servers.)

Thank you so much for that, I would have never looked! Just unticked mine as well!

For anyone wanting to actively frustrate gen-AI programmes, there are a couple of programmes I’ve been meaning to start using: Glaze and Nightshade.

Glaze protects your work against mimicry: Glaze - What is Glaze

Nightshade actively distorts images (to an AI model) to frustrate the learning pattern: https://nightshade.cs.uchicago.edu/whatis.html

They’re both quite intense programmes - I don’t think my laptop could cope when I tried to use Glaze a few months ago - but they’re well worth knowing about and trying, especially if you’re a visual artist selling prints and replicas.

Thank you so much for sharing, just done mine, wouldn’t have had a clue if you hadn’t posted.
Wonder if Instagram will do something similar?

@PaintedHorseArt Instagram have done it already. Well, I had a notification not long after I joined last summer informing me that my content would be used to train AI, and I’d have to email to deny permission. Did that, and it opted me out straight away. My brother had the same message probably about this time last year, and he left the platform because of it.

Francesca @francescaswords thank you for flagging this up, I had no idea. I’ll go and opt both my accounts out now. (I despise AI!!!).

Thank you - it’s not right that they should automatically opt you in …

Thanks, I have also adjusted my account by switching off AI.

Thank you, I will be making sure to switch that off. Appreciate the heads up.

Managed ro find it on IG, no idea how but I did lol…just got an email Hi,

We will honour your objection for your public information, such as public posts and comments, and for your messages with AIs. This means that we won’t use your public information from Facebook and Instagram or your messages with AIs for future development and improvement of generative AI models for AI at Meta.

‘We will also honour your objection for any other accounts that you’ve added to the same Accounts Centre as this account. If you have other accounts that are not added to the same Accounts Centre as this one, you’ll need to submit a new request for each of those accounts.’

How do you email them Debby, I really want to opt out but can’t find how to do it?

Thanks lovely, I found it easy on Pinterest, Instagram however is a whole different kettle of fish.

Ah sorry, misunderstood :see_no_evil:. It’s a bit more lost down the back of the sofa on IG!!
Go into settings then…

Should do it
