Hello, is it possible to set postage costs for additional items at £0.00 for one category of items so it doesn’t apply to other bulkier items ie. if someone was to purchase 2 pairs of earrings or earrings and a necklace there would be no additional postage cost for the second item of jewellery without this applying to knitted items which are bulkier? Or would this complicate things?
You would be able to do it but you need to go to every item, or bulk edit postage just on those items and insert 0.00. Tick the ones you want to change.
The system automatically charges the highest postage and I’m guessing that the knitted items already have a higher postage rate than the jewellery. So if you put 0 in the additional item for the jewellery then if someone buys something knitted and a piece of jewellery it will charge the higher knitted rate and no extra postage for the jewellery. (If they buy multiple jewellery pieces it will charge the jewellery rate and no extra postage for the second piece)
When buying multiple items, the item with the most expensive shipping is charged its main shipping price, and then every other item in the order is charged its own additional item price.
That means as long as you put a cost in ‘additional items’ for your knitted items, it should work.
If you had jewellery items as £2.95 shipping / £0 additional items
and knitted items as £2.95 shipping / £2 additional items
A buyer would be charged £2.95 to buy 2 jewellery items, £2.95 to buy a knitted item and a jewellery item, but £4.95 to buy 2 knitted items.
Also be aware to set free additional shipping you need to enter ‘0’ in the box, leaving it blank means no discount and the buyer is charged the initial postage again.
Thank you
Thank you!
Thank you
Sorry, maths not my strong point… yes, I get that the system charges the more expensive postage first but I can’t work out the second part of your example, where a customer bought one of each type of item but only got charged £2.95, because if both knitted and jewellery items have exactly the same postage price how does the system decide which is the main item and which is the additional one? (why wouldn’t it charge the additional £2 for the knitted item?) Does it then depend on the order in which the items were added to the cart? Or do sellers just need to be careful to make sure that items in different categories have different postage prices?
@LooneySpoons Sorry you’re right, when the initial postage cost is the same it’s not guaranteed that it will always pick up the free postage as the additional one. I forgot that as usually the item charged additional postage also has a more expensive initial weight.
If you want to make sure it always works out but they do both cost the same to post a single item, you may just want to make a minimal difference to the initial price, such as £3 and £2.95.
Thanks Kim, that’s very useful to know!
