Postage options

Morning all. I have recently opened my shop and had my 1st sale yesterday. What a shock I got when I went to the post office £1.60 1st class. I have changed my postage to reflect this. Would you all offer a 2nd class option and if so how do I do this please. Dawn

I send all mine second class post, and state this in the ‘buying from me’ section in my shop. I have occasionally sent 1st class if the customer has bought more than 1 item & the extra postage covers 1st class post.

I always send 2nd class and that is expensive enough. There is no cheap alternative sadly at this time.

I would also suggest you put a small amount or zero in the ‘additional items’ box as currently customers will pay £1.60 for each card they buy…so if they buy 3 cards off you in one order they are gong to be paying £4.80 postage…this may put customers off buying from you.

I’ve always used second class, I make that clear in my shop and ask that if a customer is in a hurry, they contact me to arrange first class. Only one person ever has.

Dawn @worldofcards, I realise that sending cards you probably need certain packaging for protection, but as you have been charged for a Large Letter, I wonder if there’s any chance of you tweaking your packaging so that the size and weight falls within the standard letter category? (I have a postal template ruler and it is one of the most useful things I have ever bought)

I too have one of those postal rulers, its a great thing to have handy. I got it from Amazon and check everything I make with it to calculate the postage. I use First Class postage to send out my cards. I have toyed with the idea of changing to 2nd but haven’t as yet. The majority of my cards go standard, including 5 x 7 and 6 x 6, rather than large letter. It depends on if there is a lot of dimension and embellishments on the cards, that will increase the postage. I’ve actually just updated my postal charges this weekend to bring them in line with the April increase, I had a stock of pre-price increase stamps and charge customers only what Royal Mail charge me. So far this has worked well for me, hope that’s helpful and good luck with your shop  :+1:

I reluctantly put up my postage and packing charges to reflect real-life increases in both areas as I use large letter boxes for my 3 dimensional cards to protect them. I have considered whether I should switch to second class but I generally find buyers leave it quite late to order cards for specific occasions and some expect Amazon like delivery speed even though I clearly state my time window of within 3 days. I did wonder if it would put people off but my sales have not been noticeably affected yet. As a buyer I understand there is no such thing as free postage and realise that everyone is trying to make prices as competitive as possible whilst coping with the cost of living crisis we are in. The rising cost of postage certainly hasn’t helped sellers that’s for sure.

I always used second class (tracked 48 for items over £20 value) as First class is not a guaranteed delivery next day. The only way to achieve this in the UK is Special delivery which is just way too high for a typical order.
My problem is updating postage on Folksy as there is no bulk update facility or postal classes such as those available via WooCommerce or other online marketplace. It is just not practical to go through all my 100+ items individually, by the time I have achieved a complete update, the postage has changed again.
This is making me avoid adding new items to my shop.

@MaireCurtis There is a bulk edit facility for postage costs if you just want to edit the postage cost of all or some items. Just go to your dashboard and under the ‘items’ catagory is ‘bulk edit listings’

Yes definitely agree, that’s what I used to update mine, had no problems.

Thank you, when I asked this question of Folksy, I received an email saying there was no bulk update facility.
I will check it out.
Kind regards

Hi, thank you for your response. I had my cards priced at £1.10 for postage but when I got to the post office it was £1.60. It was a shock, to say the least as it wasn’t a bulky card so must have been the envelope that was a c5 boarded one. I always send my cards in these envelopes so I know they will arrive as I have sent them.

The dimensions of a C5 envelope fall within the normal letter size, but the maximum thickness allowed is 5mm, and maximum weight is 100g, so it must have been one of those which put it in the large letter category.

I’d love a bulk postage editing option too!

There is a bulk edit postage. It’s titled Bulk Edit Listings. It’s on your dashboard under items.
