Postal increases

Did anyone else hear on the news this morning another possible increase in costs by Royal Mail.

I stayed with first class in April but really do think will have to change to second if the increase goes ahead. DH said change to second class now and if anyone wants urgent they will have to pay the difference.

Just the way the cookie crumbles.

Iā€™ve always offered second class as standard and more recently have added ā€˜contact me if you would like it soonerā€™ etc but in 12 years selling on-line Iā€™ve only ever had one person ask for an upgrade. I hadnā€™t heard about the possibility of another increase, yet another challenge !

Yes, Iā€™m also thinking of making second class postage my standard rate.

Iā€™ve been offering 2nd class for a couple of years now and no one has asked me to upgrade the shipping. If it is close to Xmas, I usually upgrade for free.

I hadnā€™t heard of another increase. Iā€™ve always sent 2nd class as in my experience the extra for 1st class just isnā€™t worth it. Iā€™ve had 2nd class be delivered the next day. If anyone asked, I would of course do the upgrade and charge them accordingly.

Yes, saw this come up on my news feed on the phone this morning. Disappointing news, I too have posted things 2nd class and the person has received them the next day, so was thinking about this anyway. I currently charge for First Class postage 95 p and 50 p for additional items, but think I may change this to Second Class going forward.

I offer ā€˜free postā€™ on most items and.I have been sending my relatively more expensive items 1st class and the cheaper ones 2nd. I bought a sheet of each large letter stamp before the last increase (wish Iā€™d bought more now). My idea was to use them up and then rethink it, but if a further increase happens so soon Iā€™d probably be best switching to 2nd class for everything so it at least makes sense the buyers.

It would be helpful if Folksy could introduce a way for us to mark the class of postage offered on the listing and be able to charge for an upgrade at the point of sale.

The only issue I have with 2nd class post is that when it does get delayed, the window before itā€™s considered missing feels really long and can be difficult to ask the customer to wait it out

Yes I did see that, lets hope they change their minds about it, itā€™s always the little businesses that suffer the most.

I offer free Royal Mail postage to the UK as standard - low cost items go second class and more expensive go tracked signed etc. If postage goes up I either absorb the costs or if itā€™s a big increase then I put up the price of my items by a little bit so itā€™s covered. International stuff is always priced separately and I allow a large margin on postage costs so increases can be absorbed - if an international buyer wants an item enough then they are happy to pay a large fee for postage. (If there is a real discrepancy between what it costs to send and the quoted price then I include a little ā€˜free gift itemā€™ for the buyer to make up for it).

At the moment I send and charge for first class (I donā€™t charge for packaging). However, my P&P is already MORE than the cost of one of my cards, so it is getting a bit ridiculous ( and no I donā€™t really want to increase the cost of the cards at the moment). I will seriously consider sending 2nd class but it will be a lot of work, going through over 400 items to lower the shipping feesā€¦
Often if people want a card, it is usually quite urgent and too complicated for me to get involved in refunds, so perhaps I would absorb the cost if someone wanted one in a hurryā€¦
I would also need to amend what it says in my bio so that people are aware that I am using 2nd class
Has anyone any idea when this ā€œmightā€ happen? Caroline @Caroleecrafts

I have just gone through 700 items and altered to 2nd class. DH suggested that I charge a flat rate regardless as he said John Lewis, Boots etc charge a flat rate unless over a certain amount. He suggested Ā£2.50 and absorb the cost by increasing prices. The problem with that is cards would be ridiculous.

Not sure what happens if you increase the price of cards hence postage in cost but they order more items with a flat rate. Does Folksy charge the flat rate or zero? I know atm it charges the higher amount first. If that is the case that may be the way to go as fed up with all the work to change everything.

Think Folksy need to look at the postage and allow us to enter more options that does not affect the commission paid, or defeats the object.

Having simple shipping profiles would help. At least then you only have to change the postage on each profile. I know on here there is the bulk edit but its still a pain scrolling through to find all the items with the same shipping.

Can you incorporate postage into variations? My items are generally one offs, so Iā€™ve never used the variation option. Maybe second class with the item and a variation adding 50p to upgrade to first class?

Yes, you can set up a variation for that. Iā€™ve not done it but someone suggested it to me for upgrading to next day delivery.
It means going into every listing which is a pain when youā€™ve over 200 items.
Folksy really need to offer the facility to allow for more than one class of postage to be offered.
I asked for this goodness knows how many years ago.
Perhaps if everyone could vote for it they might take notice.

Improvements to shipping is something weā€™re planning on working on in the future, however we know there are a lot of features that sellers want/need that are related to this, so itā€™s not something we can just quickly add. It will take some time to develop (and there are other issues we need to prioritise first), but donā€™t worry, itā€™s not something weā€™re ignoring.

I send second class large letter. Although a few of mine will be parcels and no idea how much that will cost through Royal Mail.
I could use Evri but donā€™t trust the couriers. Sold 10 items on eBay all parcelled, never came to collect. And then five of those didnā€™t get to their destination either.

I always use Second Class postage and find my packages arrive as quickly as they would if I sent them First Class. I posted several items on Monday afternoon and they all arrived on Wednesday morning.
