For those of you that have sold to the US via Folksy were your customers charged their state tax at customs or is it not an issue as Folksy is a British based company? Thanks in advance.
I’ve never had a customer in the USA charged any sort of taxes for any of the items sold via Folksy.
Thanks for the information
I don’t believe the Folksy system can cope with that as some other marketplaces do. That being so, I believe that we’re technically responsible for collecting and remitting those state taxes to the states ourselves - unless someone else knows better?
Edited to correct myself now that I’ve done some more research! The purchaser in the US State that has a Sales Tax has a duty to report their purchase and remit any taxes due if the marketplace hasn’t charged them. And and marketplace (or seller) that’s not registered for business in the US won’t (and doesn’t have to) collect the tax. I suspect most US citizens view that as a technicality and probably don’t report it…
I have stopped selling to the USA until things settle down as D. Trump keeps changing his mind. I just don’t want the worry or hassle if an order comes under scrutiny.
That’s really interesting thanks!
Goodness knows how the US postal service will cope with all the new international tariffs!
Traditionally, customs were only charged on goods imported from UK to USA that were over $800 in value. Everything below that threshold was tariff free. Who knows what’s happening at the moment though. USA import regs seem to be changing hourly!
No, it isn’t the customs import tax we’re on about Chris - it’s the local state Sales Tax that’s a separate thing - people in some states ( I think the majority these days) have to pay a tax on things they buy from oustide the US, of any value.
Oh I beg your pardon. I have sold to USA before but I have no idea what state tax the customer was charged.
So many taxes that it’s a struggle to keep up with them all!
