@Bearlescent @PaintedHorseArt I wouldn’t worry about it too much - the photos appear fine when scrolling IG which is where most people will see you images. I know I don’t look at someones actual grid and when I do, I don’t really care what their grid looks like, I always click on the individual image to look more closely at their work.
It looks awful. I don’t like adjusting it by adding the top and bottom border either.
Square for here at the other place so I’ll continue doing square. Most people only scroll the feed anyway and not look at the grid. I think only people look at profiles when they see a post in their feed then look at the profile before following. Once following, I very rarely visit a profile.
That’s true it’s very rare I look at someone else’s grid… however it still looks very untidy which will drive me mad lol, so I might continue with square and add the border to make it fit. I just wish they would stop changing things on SM … if it’s not broken why try to fix it.
It keeps developers in a job.
Is this just on phones? Mine (laptop) looks the same. Mind you, I often chose the ‘original’ picture size when posting, rather than the square they crop to automatically. Though I’ve just looked at yours Debby @Bearlescent and it looks fine on my screen (unless you’ve changed something already?).
I’m working on something today and was taking little video clips to make a reel. Then my brother dropped ‘vertical format’ on me… Is that really what you’re supposed to use for reels? I’m sure the last time I filmed a video in portrait it looked crap on Instagram!
This will sound really smug but I read about this change a while back so have been uploading portrait photos to Instagram since then…Scrolling back through my grid I can see I made the change from square to portrait August time, so I must have heard about it then (no idea from where!)
Moving forwards, you should upload photos that are cropped in a 5:4 ratio (that’s the official Instagram ratio, but if your phone doesn’t offer that, using a 4:3 ratio should be close enough and Instagram will crop further).
In terms of Folksy images, different ratios are used in different places on mobile (unless it’s just me?) - square on homepage, portrait on search results, square on shop pages. The portrait on mobile search results is particularly problematic for many of us - I can see lots of images with call-out circles cropped out (including on yours @LooneySpoons ) and more generally, things just looking a bit pants (the sides of all my flowers cut off)
I have changed the last few rows on the grid as half my pictures were cut off so I’ve done as I said earlier and used the adjust preview option, they now have a border top and bottom but at least they are square again. I might continue to do it like this saves having more photos stored.
Mine are still coming up square at the moment.
I think the roll-out must be from the viewer’s point of view, as @KarenStottJewellery your grid is made up of portrait photos for me. But very fortunately the vast-vast majority of yours look like they were intended that way!
Interesting, when I look at them they are definitely square. Thank you for the photo, it’s good to see how others see them.
Thanks for this Debby, I’ve just changed some of mine but they look odd with the border so I’m really not sure now, just wish they’d leave stuff alone if it’s working.
Thank you
Can I recommend @pinkstormsocial on Instagram - she’s an Instagram expert and gives really useful tips and advice, including heads up on planned changes.

I think it’s pretty useless fighting the change and trying to keep your square formats.
I run two accounts - one for me and one for our collective shop in Bury.
My grid is showing the new 5:4 ratio aspect but the shop is still showing the old squares for now… it will change! So I’m getting into the habit of changing my photos from now…
I think I’m probably going to do this on Folksy too as they’ll get cropped to squares on the thumbnails automatically anyway.
It saves having too many formats on too many platforms.
I wonder if there’s been any discussion at @Folksyadmin @folksycontent about possibly adopting this new format in future too?
I really hope that folksy don’t change to the new Instagram format…. I have a workaround thanks to @Bearlescent that I’m ok with now, I really prefer how Folksy present our images.
I think I heard on one of the Folksy seller videos that Folksy are indeed planning to change from square format photos… not sure when that’s planned, but speaking as someone who makes everything into nice pleasing squares:
I spent a couple of hours the other day trying to make templates for my various IG layouts… got fed up, thought ‘sod it’ I’m staying square, deleted what I’d made in a huff, and now think I’m going to have to start again!
My feed is still looking normal so I guess they’re updating IG in batches - the only thing I can say is that everyone’s profile feed will probably look out of whack (unless they’ve always uploaded in portrait), so I’m just going to shrug that off. Plus there’s not a lot I can do about it now!
I just wish all the SM sites would get together in a room and agree a shape and stick to it!!!
So it seems IG like your image should now be 4:5 ratio… but does anyone know what FB like (for a normal post type photo)? I’m googling and getting lots of different sizes. I know that my square pictures are getting turned into more landscape shape and they’re adding colour to the sides to make it fit - they look like a roughly 8:7 ratio?
So portrait for IG, landscape for FB…? Could they make it more annoying do you think?!
@folksycontent Can I ask what dimensions Folksy are using? Would you mind sharing? Your posts look different to mine, I guess because you’re re-using your portrait shaped IG images, rather than square??
Awww I feel your pain! Do you use Canva?
I think if we all wait a while they’ll catch up to the new 5:4 format which will help us all enormously!
I don’t use Canva, no - I just create everything in Photoshop. I’ve posted my first 4:5 image on my IG feed this morning, but I’ve tried to make sure it will also work in square format for those that haven’t switched over yet (my feed still all looks square). I think it worked! I posted the exact same image on FB and that’s just had wider bands added automatically down the side (don’t think I like that much), and also on my Twitter/X where I think square works much better.
Just really hate the idea of having to recreate the same image in 3 different ways!
