Just purchased ’ Citadel’ by Kate Mosse , which is supposed to be my ‘holiday read’ in two weeks time . It’s going to be hard not to dive in to it straight away !!! If it’s as good as Labyrinth , it’ll be worth the wait though !!

@ShropshireNaturalProducts

If you like sci fi and epic fantasy try Anne McCaffrey’s books about Pern and telepathic dragons.

Or Julian May’s series of books about The Many Coloured Land - time travel and ESP

Then there are the Dune books by Frank Herbert - one of the most brilliant stories ever - so much better than the film!

All brilliant series with lots of big fat books to read, most available as ebooks.

Also if you like your sci-fi dark then try Iain M. Banks’ Culture novels.

@ShropshireNaturalProducts I think you might enjoy a book I mentioned in a previous post - Dinosaurs and Prime Numbers by Tom Moran.

Hi, this is my first attempt at the whole social media thing as I’ve managed to avoid it so far and I don’t know what I’m doing!

I’ve just finished a book by Martin Edwards called The Coffin Trail from a series called the Lake District Mysteries. It’s one of those annoying books you can’t put down and as I live in the Lake District I know some of the areas mentioned in the book. It’s got murder, injustice, twists, history and a bit of a love story with some good local characters and keeps you guessing to the end.

Thank you I will have a look for it right away

totally agree about the Pern books, they’re brilliant. I don’t like the ones her son wrote though. And also agree about Dune, I really wanted to like the film but my goodness it’s rubbish. Books are great though.

Hi. I’m reading 12 Years a Slave. Haven’t seen the movie so its all new to me. Terrific narrative and truly makes you think.

I don’t like the later Pern books either, they dropped right off when her son started writing.

If you like the original Dune books, have you read some of the prequels written by Brian Herbet and Kevin J. Anderson?
The three books - House Atreides, House Harkonnen and House Corrino are brilliant, even better than the original Dune I would say.
They are all about the main characters but their early life and how they came to be in the positions they were when the original Dune book starts.
You also get to find out who Jessica’s mother was!!

yep, I enjoyed them too.

It was a sad sad day when we lost Anne McCaffrey, Todd McCaffrey does try but they aren’t s good. Although I have read that he’s going to carry on the story of Lessa and F’lar so I’ll be keeping an eye out for them. I downloaded the dune books last night so will be reading them once I’ve finished Terry Pratchett.

And it’s a sad day today to learn that the great Maya Angelou has died: I was quite affected by her books and poetry when I discovered it many moons ago.

If anybody likes detective stories and fancies a new author - I’ll be upfront and say it’s a friend of mine (making objectivity difficult!) - you could do worse than try out 2 stories on the kindle/equivalent: the first is based on the apparent accidental death of a 6th form canoeist - I read this is double quick time: http://www.amazon.co.uk/An-Accidental-Death-Smith-Investigation-ebook/dp/B00FN0YJ6S/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1401291844&sr=8-1&keywords=peter+grainger
The second is the apparent natural death of an old lady in a home - it’s more thoughtful, but a rounded tale, all the same - http://www.amazon.co.uk/But-For-The-Grace-Investigation-ebook/dp/B00JR9OF6A/ref=pd_sim_kinc_1?ie=UTF8&refRID=032A26CEPAPQCPWFRNZ3

If anybody does read them it would be great to hear your views.

Currently reading the Tale of Genji by Murasaki Shikibu, for the second time and still not really following who is who.
It is a Japanese novel written 1,000 years ago and translated into English.
Very enjoyable with lots of 4 line poems and great names.

Good to hear you read the other prequel Dune books Heather @NiftyKnits

Enjoy Dune @ShropshireNaturalProducts

I am afraid I am not into detective stories @MsCupCake but I hope your friend does well.
