I am often asked “What is an aceo?“
So again I will give a small explanation.
ACEO stands for Art Cards, Editions and Originals.
An aceo is a miniature painting or drawing or artwork, that MUST measure 2.5” x 3.5”.
The concept was started in the US , when an artist who was struggling to sell his work realised that it wasn’t because people didn’t want them, it was because they didn’t have enough wall space to hang any more larger paintings. He came up with the idea that if he could paint miniatures, people could collect them and display them in photo albums…just like people collect football cards.
The idea quickly caught on and thousands of people started collecting.
Today, People all over the world have many hundreds in their collections of these tiny artworks.
A way to collect art at reasonable prices without worrying about where to put them.
ATC’s are in effect the same thing except that ATC’s (artist trading cards) are made to be swapped and not sold…apart from that, there is no difference.
SO…can we tempt you to start a collection?..or join us in making some aceo’s?
If you have any aceo’s to show, please share them on this thread.
I have many of them in my folksy shop…here is one of them
.
Brenda, I have always wanted to know what ACEO stood for, but didnt dare ask, thought it must be written somewhere on Folksy, but I just couldn’t find it. Thank you. You learn something new everyday, and this has been a long time learning!
Suzzie x
Thank you Suzzie…we have even had people crochet aceos…as long as the size is right and they are not too bulky !!..I think it was Natalie from N ofkant curios has made some knitted ones in the past.
I do give an explanation from time to time but don’t want to bore people…lol…x
Great explanation Brenda, good to let everyone know!
Please feel free to show yours Daisywings…x
I’ve just been lucky enough to ‘love’ one of @DaisyWings
Thank you for posting my aceo Suzzie

gone to your shop to give it some love SUe x
Thank you Brenda @teabreaks
You may have started a new collection for me now… I’ve always loved your work @teabreaks and I have also found that WHSmiths stocks the cellophane sleeves that you can store smaller collectable things in (bought some to accommodate my daughter’s Yoyo cards collections!!).
I’ve seen some textile ‘postcards’ on Pinterest and thought them lovely - are these the same as ACEOs?
the size is the important thing and the word POSTCARD says to me 4x6 , so no those wouldn’t be ACEO’s…anything goes as long as the work is reasonably FLAT (to fit in the plastic sleeves) they MUST measure 2.5" x 3.5"…you can get the aceos sleeves from eb and AM Some sellers on here also sell tiny frames to fit them…I am sure they can show them on this thread !!
Certainly you can make some textile ones…I even have a cross stitch one in my own collection…
Love painting and looking at other people aceos!
I have different ones such as
from artmagic
Yes they would definitely be different then because they were also very thick with lots of embellishments. Lovely, but clearly a different thing. After reading the thread yesterdayI had a look at some different shops and I think you really have convinced me to become a collector!! I see there are people offering prints in this category too but I am going to stick with original art only. Going to make a list and then give it to my husband for Christmas gift ideas!!
If only Folksy had the ability for people to create a wish list that could be shared!
Great Idea Heidi @Textiletreasure, maybe you could use a pinterest board as a wishlist
I really love painting ACEOs, the tiny size means they can be taken out and about and I’m often to be found painting them in my local coffee shop
These pet portrait ACEOs of mine are very popular
