Hi, I was just wondering about how to offer customers different postage options when they buy from me. How do other people go about it? At the moment I just set my price for each item based on sending Royal mail first class, but I’m thinking that offering quicker delivery at a higher cost or cheaper options may be beneficial. Would I just add it into the drop down menu for each item? Thanks.
Hi Jayne. I have a postage upgrade option in my listings that can be added to the basket. Only problem with this is that it gets treated like a sale so has all the added fees etc!!
Thanks, I had noticed that some people had used an extra listing. It’d never occurred to me about it incurring fees. Do you think the drop down menu option would work?
It’s possible though you would need the cheapest delivery to be your standard one (the one that shows in your ‘Shipping & Delivery box’). For example £2.50, that covers Second Class. So you would therefore set up:
Name of drop-down: Delivery upgrades
Description: Items are sent Royal Mail Second Class. Would you like to upgrade your delivery?
Drop-down options:
No thank you {0.00}
First Class {1.30}
First Class Tracked {2.20}
(i.e. so someone choosing First Class Tracked ends up paying you £2.20 plus the £2.50).
You would be paying Folksy commission on the upgrades so you would need to factor that in.
I don’t think it could work if you also sell outside of the UK. Most sellers offer a delivery upgrade as a separate listing.
Thanks that’s really helpful. There’s so much to learn and I’m getting there by trial and error at the moment so it’s good to have advice from other makers.
Hi, I’ve just looked at this for my own as 1st class is getting so expensive! I decided to go with putting an announcement on my front page advising that I’ll be sending 2nd class & if anything is required urgently to contact & I’ll quote for a 1st class delivery - then I can just amend if briefly for that item & change back once purchased if buyer is happy with the quote!
Cheers Lou
Interesting post, never thought about it before! I send all my items via EVRI as they are all parcels. I may now add a note in the listings that if it’s required urgently contact me for revised price.
I suppose as we get closer to Xmas and last dates for posting then it becomes a consideration
Thanks for your contributions everyone. I’ve realised that I’ve got a lot to learn with regards to postage. I sent out an order today thinking I could send it as a large letter but my box was fractionally too large so I’d mis judged the postage cost by quite a lot! My items are different sizes and weights so it’s not like I can charge a flat postage rate for everything. I’m going to go back and measure and weigh everything and figure out the most cost effective way of doing things- wish me luck!
Buying royal mail sized small parcel and large letter boxes was an absolute game changer for me…makes this all so much easier. X
