Discounts on bulk orders

I’d really like to offer a discount when people buy multiple cards, something like 4 for £6, or 10 for £14, but I can’t think of a simple way to do it.

I can’t use variations of 1, 4 or 10 cards, because I want people to be able to mix, not just get lots of one design.

All I can think of is to have a listing for “mix and match 4 cards” that has photos of all my designs with numbers next to them, and then the description saying
“1 - thank ewe
2 - warm cat squares
3 - cool cat squares…”
and asks buyers to send a message stating which they want. I can imagine it might be a hassle though with buyers not writing anything, or writing 3 designs and me having to chase them up to find out which they want 2 of, plus I’d need to update the photos whenever I have a new design.

Does that sound easy enough to understand? Or has anyone found another way to offer something similar?

Hi Kim

I have listings for ‘sets’ of 4 cards priced at a slight reduction on buying them separately. But i picked what I thought would make a ‘set’. However, for this one there are 8 different designs so I listed the names, and say that the buyer can pick any four, and if they don’t choose, i will pick them myself (so I don’t end up trying to contact someone who hasn’t read the details in the listing properly!).

I made a sale yesterday where someone chose three of these and one other random design to make up the 4, and I’m totally cool with that.

That sounds like a good idea, let them pick with a warning if they don’t select the right number, I’ll make up the rest.

I might just have to make a test listing to see how it looks, if it’s too much… it’s going to be around 30 designs before I’ve even got the Christmas cards out again (maybe I’ll do a separate one for them),

I wish we could just set some sort of discount on a section that automatically puts one free when you’ve bought a certain amount… but I guess it’d be really complicated for Folksy to set up.

I just had a quick search to see how others had done this and as an alternative to the ‘please specify in the message to seller box’ one shop was suggesting that people favourite the designs they want and then the shop will go and look at their shop activity to find out what is wanted. This would have an advantage that you wouldn’t need to remember to update text if one design was discontinued/ out of stock. (their listing is https://folksy.com/items/7107280-Greeting-card-pack-Greeting-card-set-Choose-your-own-cards-Mixed-cards-combo)
Definitely have something in there that if nothing is specified then you will randomly select from the current stock so that you don’t have to chase up on what they want.

I like the way they’ve done it with a code on each listing, so they haven’t had to put a photo of every design and keep it updated, and it sorts out the problem of what to do with Christmas cards.

I’m not sure if favouriting might get a bit confusing though. The buyer would have to understand to do them at a similar time and definitely don’t favourite any other items just because they like them and might want it in the future, and if they’d previously favourited the item, they’d have to unclick it then click it again to make it show up for us. Then if they wanted multiples of any design they wouldn’t be able to show that through favourites either.

Hmm, I could do use message to seller or the text required variation (all codes in one box), but I’m not sure if there’s a character limit for that. Oooh I just noticed we can have 4 variations though, I thought it was only 2, so I could use separate variation boxes for a 4 card offer, but not 10… and it would still require codes because you can only have 10 options on a drop down box.

Codes sound the way to go. Then just say, ‘tell me the codes’.
Are you happy for them to mix and match cards of different sizes/shapes? Or is limiting that getting too complicated?

Yep, codes sounds like a good idea.

I’m fine with different sizes/shapes because they’re all the same price anyway (at least while I’m printing myself). I used to really want cute little 3" cards with an animal on the front… until I noticed the card blanks were the same price as my 6" ones, and I can’t imagine a buyer understanding a tiny card is the same price as a normal one. Just doesn’t seem right!

I finally got around to making my first listing, let me know if you think anything needs making clearer or rewording. I don’t want it to confuse people!

I can understand it and it didn’t confuse me (and I am often easily confused). I’ve been trying to come up with ways of offering similar and this looks pretty foolproof.

Yay! Thanks Chris, and feel free to use it in your own shop too :slightly_smiling_face: Thought it’d be good to get sorted before the Christmas cards come out, that’s normally when people start buying multiples.

I wasn’t going to presume that I could steal your idea, but, hey thanks for the offer!
I have only given Christmas cards a passing thought so far. Perhaps after my summer holiday I might give it some more thought.

It’s only because I’ve got some from last year that I just need to click “relist” on. I’ve got a half finished design I’ve had for a couple of years and still can’t bring myself to think Christmassy to finish it off yet.
