The change of seasons always makes me want to organise, especially at this time of year when the schools go back & holidays are over. I’ve decided to go back to uni to do a Masters in Creative Writing - at least it’s still creative! But I know I’m going to have to be on the ball with the business & study as well as home routines. I’m hoping there are some organised brides & grooms out there just now too, looking for a book to list & collect all their ideas in
Morning all - very overcast and cloudy here - finding the atmosphere difficult to cope with - it is so hot and humid - I cant seem to cool off at all and feeling a bit drained. Dont cope with warm weather very well - my arthritis is always worse in hot weather than cold. Must stop grumbling and get on with the chores that need doing after a very busy weekend in the village. Great success tho. Derby Telegraph done a great coverage I’m told.
Overcast here too, better for marbling though!
Morning all, it was a super sunny weekend here, but today we are back to drizzle.
Can I add 2 to the tally please Max @paperchainsandbeads . Thanks Carol @cariadcrafts11 x
Good morning - today’s listing is another floral plaque.
1 sale for me please Max @paperchainsandbeads x
Well that was a bit of a mammoth catch up session. I’m still playing hunt the mojo but I’m doing it in glorious sunshine (yes really, Cambridge is good like that) and so I now have this for the blog interview
(I’m aiming to show all the colours and patterns that you get with fordite as well as showcasing my pendants)
and I’ve got a bit further with the hollow form ring
but I can see a hint of fire scale still so I’m going to repolish it and then take more photos. Mojo definately returning.
@SashaGarrett - I just had to look up what Fordite is - I really thought that it was a rock!
Nope its a totally man made by product (although alas they have changed the manufacturing method that resulted in its production so it is no longer made, attempts have been made to fake it but they don’t look right), also sometimes known as motor agate, Dagenham agate or Detroit agate (depending on where its from) because the patterns do look so much like natural agates. The pendants are propped up on an unusually large lump of the rough material and back row (L-R) 70’s Dagenham van production line, late 90’s Michigan area car production line, 70’s Ford Kentucky plant truck production line, front (L-R) late 70’s Dagenham car production line and mid 00’s Corvette (Bowling Green) production line. I’ve got samples covering early 60s through to mid 00’s (thats when production stopped) but some of it is currently with my cousin in the US. Not that I’m sad and geeky about it or anything.
Nothing sad or geeky about it Sasha! Says another stone geek…
That ring looks really stunning, the patterns in that Fordite
Love the Fordite Sasha @SashaGarrett: I thought it was a natural thing maybe like meteorite (OK I’m dim!).
Today’s listing:
Hi all,
Very hot and humid here in Norwich…
Jeanie x
god afternoon, yay happy dancing for sales peeps
Sasha they look fab. Can I see glitter in the hollow form ring cab? looks like it has sparkles in it
Max the hollow form ring is set with corvette fordite which has many layers of sparkly (I think the car firms prefer ‘metallic’) paint in it, I deliberately shot it in bright sunlight to try and show them off (but bright sunshine causes no end of issues with reflective silver and glare as I’m sure you’ve experienced). My understanding is that corvettes were all custom done and you specified the colour you wanted when you ordered it and they sprayed them to order so it is some of the brightest sparkliest fordite you can get (the equivalent era material from the standard Ford production line is black/ white with the odd bit of sparkly silver/ dark grey/ cherry red/ navy if you’re lucky). I think I’m starting to sound even more sad and geeky than before…
It’s really fascinating! Odd question but can you smell the odour of the spray paint when you cut it?
@RhiannonRoseJewellery no not dim at all you are highlighting one of my main issues with selling fordite jewellery - very few people in the UK have heard of it (unless they have met me at a fair). The whole ‘ite’ thing comes from Greek mean ‘of stone’ hence lots of minerals ending in it but in recent times lots of those names have simply had ite added to the name of the person who discovered it (Zoisite, Fuchsite, Morganite (well he funded the trip that found it)) or where it was found (labradorite, tanzanite). So when lapidarists cutting it needed something to call it they shoved ‘ite’ on the end of where that material had come from (the Ford factory). You also get boatite (fordite’s boat yard cousin), surfite (epoxy slag from where they have been making surf boards), bowlerite (plastic from old bowling balls) there is a grafitti paint version as well.
@thedotterypotter yes it does have a smell when I cut it - its no longer solventy (its been baked too many times for that and my years working in labs means this nose knows its solvents) but there is a characteristic smell which has changed over the years as the paint has been reformulated. The 60’s stuff smells nothing like the 90’s stuff.
Hello all. Hope those who were feeling poorly are improving, how are you @suebeacham ?
Lovely tiles @thedotterypotter how are you doing lovely?
I got to 1000 likes on FB today. I know it’s not much in the scheme of things, but it’s loads for me! Hehe x
