How does this work? Today I got the Day 14 of the Folksy Advent calendar emails which included “Our Favourite Pieces” and some pieces listed were multiples from the same designers. I’ve been with Folksy for years and I don’t recall ever being picked for anything like this. Is this purely based on the staff liking a certain type of jewellery (so yes, I accept I’m not to everyone’s taste!) or is it more random than that and I’ve just been unlucky?
I often wonder this too, I’ve had one item picked by Folksy as a ‘favourite find’ which I was delighted by, have to say I had many more views and even a couple of sales while my item was being seen regularly on the favourite finds, I could of course have been a coincidence but I am going to guess not.
I’ve not managed to do it again though sadly, so am very curious as to what I could do to improve my chances of being picked again.
Folksy does like a certain style of image and some of your back drops might be a bit fussy to fit that style, other jewellers/ people have worked out what the ‘folksy style’ is so they get picked regularly. For example I spotted your welly boot brooch in the gardeners gift guide that was linked to in an email earlier this week - that has a very simple back ground and the welly boots are perfectly lit. If you compare that to eg your hedgehog pendant (the one cut from a coin) where the background is much fussier and the pendant isn’t as well lit.
Thanks Sasha, looks like it’s down to my photography again - never my strong point. I did re-do quite a lot of them during covid when I couldn’t do any craft fairs and I had more time, but not all. Looks like that’s my next job!
There’s a blog post that gives a lot of detail about what’s looked at when picking items to feature: How to be featured on Folksy
(I know it looks quite old but it’s still relevant).
I’d say similar to Sasha, just simplifying your backdrops a bit might help a lot, the flowers can be quite distracting, especially as they seem as in focus as the jewellery so it’s not always immediately clear what you should be looking at.
I’ve never had any Folksy advent calendar emails? Is this something I needed to sign up to receive?
I just get them, thought all sellers did! Do you not get the general regular news emails either? Admin may pick this up on this thread or perhaps contact them directly?
I haven’t either, I just assumed it was something I had forgotten to sign up for and couldn’t figure out how to sign up for them. Life is chaotic for me just now outside of Folksy so had put it on my ever growing ‘to do’ list.
It seems its all about the photography… except the one item that got picked of mine wasn’t photographed any differently to pretty much all my items, anyhow, I’m grateful for the one chance I had at getting seen more and will go back and re do my photo’s when I’ve the time. I know my photography skills are somewhat lacking and it is something I’m trying to work on.
If you go to the bottom of the folksy front page you will see a button that says discover new gift ideas/ special offers ‘subscribe’. You need to click on that and sign up for promotional emails (which are different to the seller tips ones which we automatically sign up for when we open a shop). Its a legal thing, you have to sign up for promotional emails, they can’t just enroll you to receive them when you open a shop.
@PaintedHorseArt
@SeasonalSapphire
Thank you Sasha
Ahhh Thankyou. I usually reject things that say “promotional” on them so I guess that’s why I haven’t received them
I was just reading all your comments and often wonder this myself . Is it the algorithms etc which dictate what is seen …i’m not sure but perhaps it is . Maybe you need to insert key words nowadays like …Eco friendly …Ukraine …etc …
However ! …Your work is beautiful Jewellery By Silvana & Painted Horse Art …and worthy of being seen !
Folksy Admin should be monitoring this and making sure we all have an equal opportunity to be seen . Maybe they do ?
In my case …i havent sold many items on Folksy as i’m busier on other sites and its trying to allocate the time to Folksy . I did recently sell my Harris Tweed cufflinks which i was delighted about and i see my Harris Tweed flask is being shown on 'Popular now ’ on Folksy albeit on the second page .
So , i hope you all are seen better in 2023 …I’m away to check my listings to include more ‘key words’ and check my pictures are not too busy !
Have a lovely Christmas and New year .
God Bless you all and your families
Karen
