I’m sorry if there is info about this but I am wondering whether the search results are the same as the shop images I see when I go to my shop? What I mean is the little thumbnail people see when they shop in the search results.
In my shop I see this as a square picture with the edges cut out of my original upload. Is this just for my reference or is this how it actually appears in search results? If so, what size is this because I don’t think my pics will look very appealing like this. E.g. I have a rabbit picture but it is cut way down so only her head shows. I think if this is what any customer will see then it’s not really great. Is there any way I can change this? What dimensions should it be for the best pic?
Any advice on how I can get the whole picture in there? I’m guessing putting a background in but not sure this would look great either.
Thanks
Hi Deborah @artbydeborah - I have this problem too with some of my items. They look fine when opened up but are cut off in the thumb nail. I know that on the dark side site they advise looking at your shop on phones, laptops, ipads, pc etc to see how it looks but I’m not really certain how to rectify it. Not helpful I know but I wanted you to know your not on your own in this
Hi Jo, I see your pictures, they are very nice. Love the giraffe I see what you mean though, as a few edges are are a little cropped. I don’t think it makes a difference as you still have lovely pics. Maybe it’s just a case of panning back a little and not cropping too close to the image. I think I just need a bit of trial and error. Thanks for your reply
I know what you mean about panning back but I always think that the detail wont be picked up . Your rabbit painting is gorgeous and looks brilliant in the ‘nursery’ setting. I have pinned him to my Folksy finds and Folksy gifts boards to get him noticed!
Hi both! So when listing the image thumbnails on the listing & those shown in search results are cropped square. The image will show in full when someone clicks on that thumbnail in the listing.
I usually make sure to crop most of my images square when I’m editing them to make sure nothing gets chopped off. So I would suggest trying to retake the photos with enough spare space around them so you can crop them. Depending on what device you use you might even be able to set it to take the photo square, or show a square frame. If you upload a photo which isn’t square the cropping will show the centre of the image - so if you wanted to use a portrait / landscape image you need to make sure the main detail is right in the middle.
When I’m editing I resize my photos to 1000px square - this seems to get the files size down to about 1mb which helps when uploading them as the bigger files can take a while to load.
With your gorgeous rabbit Deborah - I personally think one of the photos showing the print framed on a wall would make a fab main image - maybe just zoomed in slightly? Then use the current main image with the whole print as the second photo. Your photos are fab btw! I hope this helps but just shout if you need any more info!
Hi Dee, I get what you mean. Your pictures are very central, they look fantastic. I will definitely go for square and see how that works. Appreciate your advice. Thank you
Yes, thumbnails all over Folksy (except the collections which are the odd ones out) are square. It doesn’t matter on the exact size, as a square will always have the right proportions, but make sure they’re at least 642 pixels, and as Dee says, 1000 x 1000 is a good size for not being too big to slow things down.
You don’t need all photos in your listing as square, but it does help to at least have the first photo square, as this will be the one showing on your shop front and in searches, so you want that to look its best from first look. It can be hard with very tall items like your rabbit, but I agree, a shot of it framed with a little wall to the sides would work well… although not from as far away as your current wall shots. Something like this:
Just make sure you clearly mention that the frame isn’t included in the description when you have it showing on the first photo.
One other thing to note, for your next items (now you’ll have used up your free listings) make sure you only put the quantity as 1 (as well as when you come to relist these 3) or you’ll end up with a very expensive bill!
I didn’t think about the quantity, I was just thinking limited edition maximum amount so thanks for the heads up about this. I like the example and have cut it down to this size. Much better. Thanks for your help
There is a really useful free App called Image Size which will very quickly change your pictures to the right square size with the right number of pixels. I was having trouble with my pictures fading on Folksy but this App sorted out all of the problems.
