Yes you can sell digital files but they must be your own designs.
No there is no instant download.
You will have to attach them to an email to your customers once they have paid.
I have my own knitting patterns listed you are welcome to look into my shop to see.

I don’t sell digital downloads so I’m a little hazy on the rules but I think VAT is payable on instant digital downloads so having to attach the pdf to an email after purchase might be better in terms of simplifying accounts.

correct if selling to fellow EU member countries and charging VAT at their rate of VAT it’s called VATMOSS.
Even using the attachment via an email although is acceptable by our HMRC as being vat zero rated it’s not acceptable for some of our fellow EU members.
So be careful if you plan to sell to our EU neighbours as you might end up selling to one of them that still expects us to charge VAT collect and remit it to their country.
You can always consider the option of sending patterns by mail? As in…print them and send them? I haven’t sold any patterns to EU buyers, but I do not mind that option if I have to. I will look into Payhip too.
