Instagram - puzzled by someone’s activity

Hi. Just wondered if anyone has had this happen to them… someone on Instagram is consistently tagging me in their photos - even though there is nothing to do with me or my products or my shop in their photos. They are tagging other people too in the same photo.
Why would they do this? Is it to get me to follow/like/comment on their photo? And therefore maybe to attract others to their feed? Or to (falsely) suggest we have a connection or that I approve their products?
It feels a bit weird! I’ve untagged myself in all the photos. But just wondered if I’m missing something here? Any ideas?

You could block them. But it’s probably to get you to their feed.

It’s a spam thing to get your attention. Report and block them!

I think it’s just a thing some people do to try to get people to take notice of their page, or if they think your followers might like their post. Obviously forgetting the fact most of us will just see we’re tagged in something that has nothing to do with us, get annoyed and be less likely to click/buy from that person.

It doesn’t happen to me very often (although a bit more with an art event page I run), but I always untag straight away if it’s not actually related to me/the page. I love when people appropriately tag me, but it’s just irritating when it’s random attention seeking.

How do you know if you’ve tagged onto someone else’s page when you add a post?
I just add hashtags i.e. artist bear, collectable etc could it be done without realising that it’s someones page? I’m not very good on Instagram so just add what i think is appropriate to my posts so could it be in error ? help…just in case it’s me :grinning:

To tag someone, you need to put the @ symbol in front.
Like @amberlillyhandade for eg.

Hi Debby ,
Don’t worry, it’s not you!
Hashtags like this # are absolutely fine when you’re using them to describe your photo.
What this person is doing is adding my Instagram name - @heather_andhome - to a photo they’ve posted which has absolutely nothing to do with me or with my account. Usually someone would tag a picture with other users’ names when those other users’ products appear in that photo - which is a good thing to do! You do it on the page where ‘Share’ appears in the top right corner - where it says ‘Tag people’.

@Amberlilly That’s tagging them in the comment, but you can also tag people in the actual photo, and then it will show in the “photos of this person” section, and when anyone taps on the photo a link to their account will show.
It’s not something you can do by accident, as @heatherandhome says, you have to actually click the “tag people” button, type out their name and then save the tags. There is a chance you could accidentally click the wrong account and tag the wrong person, but you still have to have gone into the tagging section to do that.

Yes that’s right. Either way you have to go out your way. Just block them.

Thanks everyone for your insights - good to know I wasn’t being paranoid or dense! Hx

ha ha pleased it wasn’t me…ah right I get it now.
How strange then if they are tagging your account, perhaps they don’t realise, maybe a newbie or an oldie like me who fumbles along Instagram trying to make sense of it.

I tried to add a picture to a story but the box stays blank and nothing uploads so I have given up until I have time to look into it more.

It must be frustrating though for you, hope it gets sorted.

Thank you

Much as I’d love to give them the benefit of the doubt, it’s just not possible for the tagging to be a newbie/oldie error - it’s definitely a deliberate ploy.
Re your problem uploading a picture @Bearlescent - try googling the problem as there’s almost always someone who has previously asked the question :slightly_smiling_face:

Thank you I will try asking google.
Can’t understand why someone would keep tagging you …strange

I think, technically, it’s against Insta terms to tag someone when it isn’t a photo of (or closely related) to them, so as someone else said you could report if you wanted to! Blocking is probably the easier option. I agree it’s definitley spammy
