Is there anyone who doesn't have a mobile phone having issues with Paypal?

I’m at my wits end with Paypal. I haven’t been able to log into my account for about 2 weeks and I feel they are fobbing me off whenever I call them.

I don’t use a mobile phone. When I want to log in to my Paypal account, I get an automated call from them on my landline and I have to enter a 4 digit number which they give me on my desk top screen. Usually works fine, but now it doesn’t seem to pick up the number I am entering. I have tried using a different handset but still doesn’t work.

After several calls, they told me it was an ongoing issue with their system and to try again in a few days. I’ve tried again today, still no joy and now the lady says it’s because my account is labelled with ‘Risk’. She’s raising a ticket with ‘the back office’ but says really I’ve just got to wait it out until the risk label is removed. No she can’t give me a time frame .

Is anyone else experiencing problems or had this in the past? Can anyone give me any advice on dealing with them? There’s a Resolution Centre but I don’t know if I can use that if I can’t log in  Anyway I don’t think I could speak to them again today, I just thought I would ask you lovely lot for ideas while I calm down.

I’m afraid it is a symptom of the growing number of service providers who are not willing to deal with people who don’t have, (or are not willing to give them the number of) a mobile phone. It is unfair and in my opinion infringes human rights, but they are deliberately making it more and more difficult for people who are not mobile phone users, in an effort to make it easier for their own systems, and in order to use customers’ mobile numbers for marketing purposes and data collection.

Sorry no help here but some times I have an issue with the mobile phone version where it takes soooo long for the validation text to come through that its expired when it arrives so I have to resort to the call me option. Occasionally those calls don’t come through and I just give up for the day. So basically yes - Paypal’s systems are a bit sh*t at times regardless of which method you use!

I’m with you there @JudyAdams, and it makes me want to dig my heels in even more! I think now even if I wanted or needed a mobile phone, I wouldn’t get one just so as to be blooming awkward. I have had to put people straight in the past who say ‘oh they are very easy to use’ in the assumption that I am unable to use one! I’ve had them in the past, in fact I was the first person I knew to own one back in about 1989, but I much prefer to be without!

I’m especially cross because I always say how I’ve never had a problem with paypal in the many years I’ve had an account :joy:.

I’m losing it with eBay now. They want to send a text in order for me to log in, not even the option of a 'phone call with them. They have my husband’s mobile number but that means I’m scuppered if he’s not here.

I’ve still not heard from Paypal and I don’t feel I can face calling them yet again.

I’m thinking I might get a cheap mobile and just leave it in my office because it looks like there will come a time when I can’t use my computer unless I have one.

That’s probably a good idea. It does make it so much easier with many things, my bank always wants me to enter a code to log in, for instance.

Sometimes you just have to give in to technology. I had a basic ‘make calls and send texts’ mobile for years and years and was adamant that I didn’t want or need a smartphone. I had email on my desktop. Why should I get a smartphone for other people’s convenience? Then came lockdown and my sister and brother 150 miles away were managing my 84 year old mum through dementia and a hip replacement, and I released how much extra difficulty I was adding to their lives when they couldn’t for instance just snap a photo of an appointment letter and whatsApp it to me, and I got one. And of course now, all those features I was ‘never going to use or need’ come in so handy…

Same problem - had a row with them a few years ago and the system started to work -they were sending codes to my landline , no problem . But yesterday , 30th January 2023 , all change : the authentication now requires a mobile phone . I sent emails , they reply via my paypal account so I cannot see the messages because I cannot log in . Just spoke to them this morning -very sympathetic lady confirms that this is it now , paypal is no longer available without a mobile phone . she said many other people in my position had complained . I also had an email from them today asking me to confirm my identity by [ you’ve guessed it ] logging into my account …so . folks , a class action needed here -how can we get together and lobby them to change the system ?

please all of you who are now excluded from paypal because you choose not to use a mobile phone write to multimillionaire Dan Schulman , CEO of paypal at Dan.schulman@paypal.com and complain .

I’m afraid the whole thing exhausted me in the end and now I have a little phone next to my computer which I keep for logging into the increasing number of sites who need to text me a number. I think I would get rid of Paypal now if I didn’t need it for Folksy. I really felt like they were fobbing me off all the time. Saying that Paypal is not available without a mobile seems unfair on those who signed up years ago when it was not necessary and have operated fine until recently. I might drop this Mr. Schulman a line!

Oh good grief. I gave in and got a smartphone some years back but my husband doesn’t have one and it’s a total nightmare. He is a regular eBay and PayPal user and I’m not looking forward to giving him the bad news…
