Post office counter - oh my goodness!

My post office drives me insane, often they havent stuck the labels on well and they over charge alot too.

I didn’t know this was a problem (!)

Thankfully the staff at my local Post Office seem to be as OCD as me when it comes to sticking down the labels.

I had never really considered this problem until I read this thread and was pleased to see the PO lady pressing the sticker firmly on my parcel when I posted it today

My post office is pretty good with this, one lady in particular always presses all the way around the label so the corners are well stuck down

Have you thought about using the Royal Mail online postage? I switched to using it for a number of reasons and one was I never think they stick the postage label on well enough
It’s the same price (which annoys me a little…I think it should be cheaper as I’m saving them time and money!).
I prefer it for anything over a LL stamp as it means I know the address is correct (you input the house name/number & postcode and RM fill in the rest) and I unless it’s too big to drop in the post box I don’t have to queue up at the post office - plus you get emailed a receipt which is your proof of purchase :slightly_smiling:

Hahaa, I thought I was the only one too. Yes I too have been known to reach through to firm down the corners on the stamp and recorded labels!
It’s scary enough sending your work through the mail hoping it will get there in one piece, without the panic that the labels will come off as well!!

Maybe we should all campaign for it to be emphasised in Post Office training meetings :slightly_smiling:

I have just posted a link to this thread on Twitter to The Post Office, as it seems to be such a widespread issue :slightly_smiling:
Their twitter answerer-of-questions is quite concerned, so hopefully they’ll look into it!

I often challenge my post office about the price they are charging me to post stuff. The thing is, I’ve weighed my package and measured it to check what size category it is in, and worked out the postage cost before I get to the PO. So if they say the price is more than I’m expecting I know perfectly well that they are wrong.

I’ve had quite a few apologies because they’ve looked at the wrong part of their computer screen!

I’ve only once had a label come off in the mail, but I had the proof of posting receipt so I was able to get a refund on behalf of my customer.

Ah, I can identify with all of this sooo much. Yes, I am self-confessed OCD with my packaging. Lots of sellotape so the contents can’t ā€˜escape’ out of the end, labels stuck on exactly straight. Sellotape over the address label to ā€˜waterproof’ it. I too have experienced the trauma of the post office bod not securing the label. I cringed and then asked her if she could pat it down please!! I hate it when simple things are not done properly :-0

Things have gone seriously downhill since my local PO changed hands (& moved in to the off licence / sweet shop)…they seriously struggle with international posting & their slap dash label application is driving me insane. My Mr Tickle-esque hand made its way through the barrier for essential label smoothing yesterday which reminded me of this thread. In the run up to Christmas I was getting a bus in to the nearest town just to access a P.O with a certain level of competence

Must add its not the Trawden Post Office as I live about 4 miles out now. The one in Trawden was spectacularly efficient - I’m sorry its had to close :frowning:

Just to say ladies,
I am having a slow start this Monday morning, as hubby kindly gave me his ā€˜man flu’ and so I thought…nice cuppa tea and a good delve into the forums…
and you know what,
I am sitting here with a smile on my face and I am feeling good!
Thank you

I was telling my Husband about this thread last week as we had just been to the local shop to post some orders.

They have changed it so the actual post office counter bit is next to the paying counters and the service is so hit and miss.
There are some amazing people who have helped me on the counter, so great that you feel completely confident that the package was going to get there, then there was a day last week.

The guy had a runny nose like a dripping tap and was constantly sniffing ( I know, not his fault ). I asked for proof of postage which he missed one out and I had to get my others out to show him that he hadn’t done it.
He stuck the labels down and they weren’t properly secure, and I was praying that he would secure them again ( which he finally did ).
The worst thing was that he decided to have a conversation with one of his co workers right in the middle of doing my post, which obviously distracted him.

Blimey, I sound like a right whingebag :grinning:

Haha - I thought this was just me!

This has made me smile - maybe we are all of a ā€œposting parcels typeā€ Lol!

I’m another who cellotapes over the label - to keep it flat and then to stop water from getting in and smudging the ink. My own post office is very good and I’ve never had these issues - but if I hadn’t cellotaped a label, I definitely would ask for it to be pressed down!!

PS completely going off subject but occasionally there is holiday cover for the postmaster and it does make me chuckle because the man who provides the cover is a quite large stocky man (his own words!!) and he has to fit into a space which can’t be any bigger than about four wide in total and about 2 foot deep. And that space has to fit in all the PO paraphernalia as well as the cashier!

I’ve never had a problem with the labels not being stuck down properly but I have had a couple of occasions where I’ve been overcharged. I used to mistakenly believe that they knew what they were doing and I religiously paid whatever they charged until one day when I had carefully made sure that something fit the measurements for a large letter and was shocked to be charged more than I expected. I thought I’d misread the prices on my pdf file at home so I didn’t challenge it but checked when I got home to discover I was right and I had been overcharged. :confounded: Since then, I meticulously measure and weigh everything and memorise the correct prices before setting off. I don’t ask how much something will cost to go any more, I say ā€œthat’s ok to go as a large letter, isn’t itā€ (or small parcel or whatever I think it should be). So far they’ve never disagreed with me, so it seems to do the trick!

This is funny - I’m glad other people would find that annoying! because things like that…eeeee

Thankfully the lady at my post office makes sure the labels are well on and pressed down. Legend!

Not really a problem I know but I thought I’d share it with you. Our local Post Office has just been moved into the pub opposite. What a fantastic idea, and it is situated at the end of the bar !! Real community spirit :grinning:

A small positive about so many Post Offices closing is that I now have a choice of only one! This means that the lovely young ladies there now recognise me, and no longer bother to ask what’s in the parcel. One of them in particular always squishes the air out before testing it will go through the size gadget, to get the best possible price

I don’t think I have all my postage woes out yet…bare with me folk…sy. My post office has also admitted going slow with the run up to last post & this is apparent. I asked for Ā£3.30 in stamps to take away (to pop on a jiffy containing a paperback book back home) & she refused to sell them initially, she said there was no need to use the post box as they are open til 9:30pm each night (apart from a weird time gap when the cleaner runs the shop on Sundays) .Then I had to calculate what stamps I wanted. I replied ā€œwell maths isn’t my strong point so I’ll take 3 x large letter 1st class & 1 x large letter 2nd classā€. She got 3 of each out, when I corrected (very politely) her she rolls her eyes & asks colleague if she can go home. I have about 10 examples but I don’t want you all nodding off before dinner

Until tomorrow when I may gripe some more on the subject. I am sorry for the moaning but thanks for listening
