Hi everyone,
As many of you will know, we experienced a site outage on Saturday (18th October) which lasted much longer than any of us would have liked. We wanted to share a bit more detail about what happened, what we’ve done since, and how we can help get some of that momentum back.
What Happened
One of our downstream services ran an automatic update which unexpectedly changed the format of a certificate - causing the system to believe it had expired (when it hadn’t). This then had a chain reaction which caused the site to go offline.
As soon as we spotted the issue, our engineer Doug was hard at work investigating and trying to get us back online. The nature of the problem meant it took time to both identify and fully resolve, but everything is now fixed. (Doug even missed his aunt’s 80th birthday party in the process - dedication points well earned!)
What We’ve Done
This was a very rare and unlucky event, and we’ve now resolved it. Outages on Folksy are extremely rare - and getting rarer as we continue to build more resilience and redundancy into our systems. We’ve already made changes to prevent this specific issue from reoccurring and will keep strengthening our infrastructure to make the site as stable as possible.
For a bit of context, even the biggest providers occasionally face similar problems - AWS (Amazon Web Services) actually went down this week, affecting a huge number of major websites across the world. Some things sit outside of any platform’s control, but what we can promise is that we’ll always act quickly, communicate honestly, and work flat out to get things running smoothly again.
How You Can Get a Boost This Week
To help recover some of that lost traffic and visibility, we’ll be doing extra promotion across our channels this week, much of which you’ll already have seen.
One way you can take advantage of this would be if you’re sharing new products on your Instagram Stories, tag @FolksyHQ - and we’ll do our best to reshare as many as possible to give your work a little boost.
Thanks again for being part of this brilliant community.
Team Folksy
