Shipping overseas question

Hello all

I used to sell overseas with no problem, then with all of the new things coming in and it just being a little bit too overwhelming for me to get my head around I just shut them all off and just have UK.
However I would like to add at least USA back if I can.

Before I just used to fill in the customs label no eori or anything and whack it on the parcel.
I do have a GB eori number if I need it, (Do I need an XI one?)

Now I’m unsure of all of this tariff code gubbins?!
Do I need these?
I’ve tried looking at the codes and just get lost.

At the moment most of my items are either cards (card, paper, glitter and glue) or items made from felt (with sequins, beads, fabric and thread).
Do you base it on the main component like the Card or the Felt or do I have to include everything I use?

If anyone can simplify the instructions on sending to USA and maybe Canada/Australia, I would be really grateful.

I have sent glass suncatchers to the USA and the post office advised me that I only had to complete a CN22 (i think there may be another CN numbered sticker if the item is worth over a certain amount but I dont know what that is) I was told to describe the contents as well as I could which i imagine would mean putting that yours is a greetings card made from etc. I think I found a suitable HS tariff code for my suncatchers but it does say enter if known. I only post to UK and USA now as the rules and regs for Europe etc are too complicated. Happy selling!

Thank you for the response Jo, I actually had forgotten I’d posted this until a few minutes ago!! Brain Fog!
I did use the CN22’s before and would just write greeting card on it.
So going to presume that posting to the USA is a bit simpler than most others?
I didn’t get too many sales from Europe but did better with USA, Canada and Australia sometimes. Not sure if I still will now but we will see!
If I don’t need to add a tariff code for USA it would make it easier until I can figure them out!

I do use tarrif codes to send overseas but the CN22 form has a box to enter the code ‘if you have one’, (can’t remember the actual wording) it’s not compulsory to USA

I think if I figure out what the codes are I will use them but will probably just add USA back for now, see how we go :slight_smile:

I have sent a couple to Canada and didnt need the code on those either. I think EU requires the most info.
I tore my hair out trying to find the codes at beginning of the year and ended up contacting HMRC who were next to bonny lol …eventually found the codes for my bears and dolls but still not figured them out for my pincushions and other embroidered bits.

your cards are beautiful. Would this tariff code work?
HS Code 490900 Printed or illustrated postcards; printed cards bearing personal greetings, messages or announcements, whether or not illustrated, with or without envelopes or trimmings: Then in the description your could write -handmade greetings card with envelope - and then say what made from - card, feather, glitter glue…unfortunately the space to write in is very small - IF I ever get another order to the USA i might try and type up the description in tiny font onto sticky paper and stick that on instead.

I also used to sell a lot to USA, but couldn’t be bothered with all the new regulations. From my own previous experiences it seems that putting the tariff code and a very short description e.g. “handmade card” gets the parcel through Customs clearance quicker. Keep clear of any mention of animal products that might come under CITES or avian flu regulations e.g. feathers.

Yes, I use the code 490900 for my greetings card, and just write “greetings card” in the description, no need to go into detail about every tiny bit of material (that’s covered in "with or without envelopes or trimmings).

I don’t sell anything like felt, so no idea what the code for that is, but you go from the main material the item is made of.

It all seemed a little too complicated for me to keep up with (it doesn’t take much!) so I just kept to UK but as sales are next to zilch I thought if I added a couple of other countries back it might help but who knows!
Helpful info on feathers will bare that in mind.
I only have one card with feathers on it so might just leave that one UK just in case!

Sounds like the way to go for the cards.
Will try to fathom out the felt items, though the felt part is the main material with sequins, beads, stuffing etc as additions?

You only use one code per item, so just go with what it’s mainly made out of.

It can get a bit complicated, as depending on exactly what it is there might be a code for the type of item (such as I think there’s one for Christmas decorations), or there might be a code based on the main material it’s made out of.

There’s a gov website to look up the codes: UK Integrated Online Tariff: Look up commodity codes, duty and VAT rates - GOV.UK
but it’s not the easiest to follow. Sometimes I find it easier to google “HS tariff” and whatever type of item you’re searching to see if you get an answer, and then cross reference it with the gov site to double check it’s right for the UK.

If you’re just using the gov site though, make sure you’re vague in what you search (such as if I search “acrylic painting” it only brings up the wrong result for “acrylic paints”, I need to be less specific and just put “painting” to bring up the correct result).
It’ll normally bring up a list of matching main categories, click on the one that seems closest and then it’ll bring up the sub-categories, and the notes at the bottom of the page can be good to make sure you’re not on the wrong section.

I will try the gov site again and see what comes up.
Wasn’t sure if it was based on the material, so the main component or on the type of product so for the felt at the moment would be something like ornament, pin cushion or stocking etc.
I just like things to be simple! ha ha! Bit like me! :rofl:

Sending to the US/Canada/Australia is really easy via RM. You just need to fill out the CN22 form and add your GB EORI number and tariff code. The tariff code which other people have mentioned on here for cards is the one you need

I used to fill in the CN22 forms previously but without the EORI or Tariff codes but when all these things started to be required, I’ve just shipped to the UK.
The Eori number I now have, at least the GB one and the Tariff code for cards seems okay, just need to figure out any other codes as I go.
At the moment it’s just felt items with other bits - sequins, beads, stuffing etc.
(Stockings, decorations etc)
