Gosh I am so tempted to look this up, but should I… Am I too delicate!
My mind is whirring with how can you make such a lovely cake sound so… well obviously crude, rude or worst!
Hello
I don’t do facebook but had the same problem with eBay and it took a while before I realised why my ID was being rejected.
I notice that your name is Kim … is that how you are logged in to facebook?
Is it an abbreviation from Kimberley? I am known as Chris and that is on all my login details as it is the name I am known as - only my mother uses my full name! So my login details did not match any of my ID. In the end I had to change my login details to my full name.
Needless to say, I have now stopped using eBay because of their poor handling of the whole scenario.
Hope this is the answer to your problem.
Ah … sorry, I have just read your updated post! I will post this anyway as someone, somewhere, might find it helpful. Glad you are sorted!
My advise would be not too! I don’t know why people even need a term for this!
Mmm… thank you… I still haven’t… and think I won’t!
Love making and enjoying that so have no wish for it to be sullied, so I will keep remaining blissfully unaware!
On what your saying there seriously is some very odd folk around!
Oh no…I had to look it up as well @WhimsicalBells…wish I hadn’t now either, curiosity obviously got the better of us
Don’t think I will be using the Urban Dictionary again
No, me either Debby! I don’t know how people come up with these things
I am getting really fed up now…
I got locked out again on Sept 7th and had to send ID and change my password again because of ‘unusual activity’, and I hadn’t posted anything in any groups or on my profile, just one post on my KB Creations page of 2 coin purses. They asked me to turn on ‘2 step authentication’ which they will use to check if it’s me when something unusual is happening…but today, I have been locked out again (13th Sept.) This time I had to confirm that certain activity on my account was me including 2 pages I liked (one was a yarn shop and one was the artist who did the picture of the queen walking with Paddington & a corgi) and 2 posts I had shared on my personal timeline showing the pictures of the Queen, etc. I can’t see how any of these are unusual activity…I’m scared to post anything now! it’s ridiculous…It seems to be every week and I have no idea why, unless someone genuinely is trying to hack into my account each week! but I’ve changed my password 3 times now so not sure how…
Goodness Kim, that all sounds very strange!! What a nuisance for you xx
The hoe, yet had a discussion about the tools last year, every time anyone said the word as Usa members of the group wanted to know what was in the photo in the garden. And most of us got a ban of 3 days
I’ve been locked out of my account twice this week and I’m not very happy about giving them lots of my personal details. I have no idea what the matter is - I posted a picture of a doll in pyjamas that’s all.
A few years ago when I put a picture of a little felt farm animal on there, I got a message warning me about selling livestock.
Did you resolve your problem easily Kim?
To be honest it drove me nuts for a while. I did have to upload a photograph of my passport to Facebook, and add 2 step authentication as well. Fingers crossed I’ve been ok for a while now.
I think there are so many hackers trying to get in to accounts now that it’s just making life even more difficult for everyone.
Thanks Kim - I think I’ve sorted it now - at least I hope I have. It’s so annoying.
I am not at all surprised by the stories I read of social media woes. It’s the main reason I won’t get involved with any of them, not even for promoting products for sale.
You have to be honest and ask yourself whether it’s worth the slog when some faceless social media team (or AI bot) demands you upload details of your face, driving licence, passport, shoe size, address, utility bills etc etc just to prove who you are so that you can chat to family, friends and sell a few products. I’m afraid as has already been said, there are too many hackers around just waiting for desperate people to upload their whole lives. The Zuckerberg Zoo has form, with regard to losing data.
I do sympathise, the social media sites do seem to have large market-places and potential for locating buyers…but at what cost?
Of course, this plays into the hands of people who are driving us all to Digital ID…oh wouldnt it be so convenient (they say) just to have one piece of information, to provide to prove who you are?
I’ve had similar with Ebay…would like to try selling a few things on there, but when you open a seller’s account they ask you to log in to your bank through some third-party provider’s platform, to verify your bank account. Er…sorry, no way. My bank password is my own.
We give away far far too much. I’ve noted Folksy’s encouragement to promote widely on social media, but as an older generation member I have too much scepticism.
Social media is a double edged sword and can be for good or great evil. If I had a child these days I would ban them from it.
Do you mind me asking how you promote your Folksy shop if you don’t use social media? Do you get much organic sales here? I ask because I deleted all my SM a couple of years ago, and life is infinitely better without it. I swore I’d never go back on any of them, but when I decided to sell online I thought I’d probably have to concede a little and get Instagram again (as per pretty much all the advice). I actually tried to make an account there a few weeks ago, after putting if off for months, and… they instantly deactivated my account for (somehow) violating one of their terms! I have no idea how, I didn’t even get the chance to log in once! I appealed it, and nothing. It’s obviously policed by bots, which I hate. It’s one reason I decided to come here instead of the other place. I’d feel very resistant to handing over a load of personal documents to try and prove my identity to a social media company (and I share your concerns about the slippery slope towards digital IDs).
But what’s the alternative? I’m looking into Pinterest, which I don’t really think of as social media… but also don’t completely understand (another thing to learn!!). I’m also thinking of working towards doing some craft fairs, and having cards linked to my Folksy shop to hand out. I’m open to other suggestions!
Hi THB, well I’ve only been on here about a month, so it’s a bit early on to decide whether it’s going to work or not. I have a separate website of my own with larger artwork, although just at this point in time I haven’t linked it that strongly to the Folksy shop…just haven’t had enough time in the day to do all I need or want to do…I do use Pinterest, though; again, I’m no expert with it, it has some complexity; and I also use it to save images for my own interest/learning/enjoyment etc. Used to put images on Flickr too, I haven’t been there for a long time, don’t know if it still exists.
. I often wonder how people managed in the early Internet days before social media was even born; back then there were such things as Web Rings, which you could join and then put the Web Ring on your own site…a bit like multi-level marketing. And it did actually work, as far as getting visitors to your site was concerned. Unfortunately Web Rings seem to have vanished.
So what do I do for promotion, well not much to be fair; my own site, Pinterest and not much else. I’m just not a social media fanatic. Pinterest is very visual and I guess Instagram would be the only other one I’d consider (though I understand it is for smartphones, can you actually use it from a standard computer?).
It’s tricky. I do search regularly for new options and openings. If my shop doesn’t sell much, well so be it, I’m not having to live off the proceeds (just as well).
I used to sell Aceo cards on Ebay, in the early 2000s, which went well until Ebay messed up the categories. I have larger artwork on two online galleries, though they aren’t returning me any income right now.
If you’re in a position to do craft fairs then that would probably be very positive. Been there done that in the past decades when I used to paint copper jewellery. Lol!
Sorry this isn’t much help, but like you I am fighting the social media tide, I am a contrarian and do not like following crowds; like lemmings they often find cliff edges…
I gave up social media about nine months ago and I wouldn’t be keen to go back. I was most active on twitter/x but trolling because I have sheep, became upsetting and unbearable. If it costs your wellbeing then the cost is too high. My concentration is better, I’m less anxious and I’m more creative.
Plus these platforms, Instagram for example, is getting users to jump through hoops trying to please an algorithm, so a few people might see your post, when you are the actual product because they want to advertise to you.
Thinking as a customer I may make the odd impulse purchase from social media, but it’s not somewhere I’d necessarily go looking. I think it’s saturated with marketing so people tune out a lot. In my experience many people don’t want to follow links either, unless they’re nosey or stalking you.
If I was looking for something I’d use a search engine, so I think optimising for that is probably the most important thing to do, however it’s cutting through the sheer volume of stuff that’s online now that is an issue.
I think a lot of people think of Pinterest as social media, but that’s really a search engine, so a great choice for handmade I think and a good alternative to the SM usuals - we’re all about the visuals!
Always nice to meet a fellow contrarian! Instagram does work on a computer, that’s how I used it as I don’t use a smartphone either. Not having a smartphone may actually throw up a problem when it comes to craft fairs, as I haven’t come across a card reader yet that doesn’t need one (again, answers on a postcard if anyone knows of one!). I’d rather use cash, but that would probably hurt sales.
I’ll need to put some work into learning to use Pinterest properly. I have a personal account already, but all I do is pin things that inspire me. There’s more to it than that I think!
I do craft fairs and have always dealt in cash and as of yet no one has asked me if I take card and tbh it doesn’t seem to have hurt sales.
